Shillary (it has to be said)

I wish we could have a female president in the US one day, but I just can't vote for Hillary. She has no observable principles, no discernable ethics, no apparent backbone, and all her motives are suspect. Arianna Huffington details the problems most people see with Hillary Clinton.

Democratic party "leaders" are idiots if they back her. Keeping an eye on Obama though. Too bad Ron Paul has all the big ideas.

Facebook Intelligence Gathering

Thanks to Air33 for the link.

This is not surprising, and it's not just Facebook -- MySpace is also being datamined by Big Brother, as are lots of other public forums. And of course, there's nothing to be done to prevent this except not participating, which also sucks. Creating fake profile info is a good idea, as is making sure your real name is not associated with your pages. The info may be around for the rest of our lives in some database or another, and many people are already finding out the hard way that their party preferences are costing them job opportunities.

In the pre-Web days, the cops used to have to snatch your phone book to find out who you knew. Now they need only your public friend list and maybe your phone. So it's not just yourself you put at risk when you publish your life online, it's everyone you know.

The Walls are being threatened with removal unless tagging in the area is reduced and the area stays clean. Venice area residents have been complaining to the City of Los Angeles regarding tagging in the area. ICU Art has negotiated a Pilot Program with the City of Los Angeles in an effort to keep the walls up. We have developed this program as a six-month trial period to see if the program can succeed. The program is managed by ICU Art with the Graffiti Artist in mind. If the program is a success, there is the possibility of more yards in other parts of the city being opened. Please help make this program a success. Keep the walls alive.

Respect:

* no dogs on weekends at the beach
* no tagging in the neighborhood

New look for The Bench

Blogger has made some new templates, and I thought this was one of the better choices. It has some rough edges, most of which I can't fix because of Google's technical limitations but I hope you'll agree it's better.

Sorry I can't show the labels on the sidebar. I wish I could, but Blogger won't allow it for blogs they don't host on blogspot. I also can't reverse the order of the archive list for the same reason.

The yellow search box searches the entire Art Crimes website, which should also search this blog. If you would rather search only the blog, use the search box at the very top of the screen on the left.

I'll improve it over time, as usual. Please feel free to send commens. There is a contact link under "Links" on the right.

[Got this today, thought some of you might be interested ...]

The 7th Annual Tiburon International Film Festival (TIFF) will be held March 13-21, 2008 in Tiburon, California. Deadline to submit films and posters: December 1, 2007 (Their website, linked above, has details about submitting films.)

Poster Contest

If your poster design is selected, your design will become the face of the Festival; it will be on the cover of the program books, t-shirts and much more--unlimited and priceless exposure. We will also post your photo and biography on the festival website for one year for greater exposure.

The contest is open to all artists. All entries must be received by deadline. There is no limit to the number of entries submitted.

Use colors and design concepts that create a strong graphic presentation. The design must be easily translated to a variety of print materials such as posters, newsprint ads, cotton t-shirts, bus ads, film, etc.

In the artwork, incorporate the following:

- March 13-21, 2008

The Great Filter

"No alien civilizations have substantially colonized our solar system or systems nearby. Thus among the billion trillion stars in our past universe, none has reached the level of technology and growth that we may soon reach. This one data point implies that a Great Filter stands between ordinary dead matter and advanced exploding lasting life. And the big question is: How far along this filter are we?"

The Destroy Television 10-Day Second Life Avatar Lifelogging Art Show Movie?Thing

"When: Wednesday, May 23rd from 7 PM ET (4 PM PT) through Sunday, June 2nd, 10 PM ET (7 PM PT), with opening and closing events on the 23rd from 7 - 10 PM ET and on the 2nd from 7 - 10 PM ET

"Where: In real life at Fuse Gallery/Lit Lounge, New York City; on the web at dtv.sheeplabs.com (the site will be up and down before the show); and in the virtual world of Second Life, the free-to-use user-created 3D online virtual world (sign-up here), including a virtual exhibition at the GHava{SL} Art Center in Second Life [the opening and closing events will be held in real life at Fuse Gallery and in Second Life at the GHava{SL} Art Center]

"Who: Created by Jerry Paffendorf (SNOOPYbrown Zamboni in SL) and Christian Westbrook (Christian Prior in SL), curated by Annie Ok (Xantherus Halberd in SL), and featuring many people and locations in Second Life, including you if you visit the Destroy Television avatar in Second Life, on the web, or at the gallery

"What: Destroy Television is the name of an avatar in Second Life who streams live video of her life and adventures to dtv.sheeplabs.com, where you see and chat and influence her movement and camera controls in SL from the web. But wait! There?s more! Destroy Television, or DTV for short, records and shares her life through a process called "lifelogging" or "lifecasting" (to define terms, logging is keeping the record and casting is sharing it live -- a popular example of real life lifecasting is the 24/7 mobile camera at justin.tv). For the entire 10 days (240 hours) of the show she will automagically capture photographs of the things she sees and tag them with location names, names of avatars present, chat, and time stamp, at a rate of one tagged picture every five seconds. These many thousands of sequential and searchable pictures will be strung together into a 90-minute time-lapse video, a kind of feature-length machinima film documenting people, places, and activities in Second Life. A smaller set of these pictures will be automagically posted to DTV?s Flickr account."

[Visit the link above to find out why virtual-world events could be interesting and to access live links to the other websites mentioned.]

Bluetooth Shoes

Forget LEDs, here come the shoes that authenticate you.

From Threat Level, which often warns about real threats that are worth fighting against. Bluetooth shoes may not be one of the worrisome things -- that is until they start broadcasting your identity or exhibiting other promiscuous or spoofable behavior.

On a similar note, some video cameras are being hooked up to software that attempts to identify people by their gait (how they walk). This type of mass surveillance may turn out to be more evil in the long run than shoes that let you into your workplace without a keycard.

US wants free image hosting sites to give up records whenever

As usual, they are waving the child porn flag, but you know they will go after writers with this too, if they can get the power. Of course, most companies already track who uses their services (with IP numbers) so the only really safe thing to do is to use a proxy server or another anonymous account not related to your home or credit card, etc.

Thanks to 12-oz for posting about this.

Of course, this applies to sites like flickr, image shack, and fotolog, etc etc, not sites like Art Crimes, since nobody directly uploads images themselves here. We also don't keep logs of user activity.

Learn more about proxies and anonymous internet use here (constantly updated proxy list): proxy.org

Please write to your congresscritters about this and other Bush regime violations of privacy and civil liberties, and to support those who fight the good fight such as EPIC and EFF and ACLU.

Cuban dissident sentenced to 12 years for graffiti

"Human rights activists in Cuba say a dissident in the country has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for writing anti-government graffiti on the walls of a public building in the capital Havana.

"Rolando Hijmenes Posada has been held without charge since 2003.

"According to the Cuban Human Rights Commission for Human Rights and Reconciliation Rolando Hijmenes was sentenced over the weekend in a closed trial without any defense representation.

"He had already spent four years in prison without in charge.

"In 2003 he is said to have written several slogans critical of President Fidel Castro on at least one building in Havana.

"He is said to be the second dissident to face prosecution in Cuba in recent weeks. "

[If you can still complain about your government, celebrate. Keep dissidence legal. - Susan]
