Maxim RIP
B-boy extraordinaire, murdered 2 months ago in Berlin.

Blaster: the vermin
If you, like many windoze users, got the Blaster Worm this week, you may not be able to get back on the net without help. If you're able to figure out how to kill a running process (program) you can turn off blaster.exe, I'm told, then run somethng like Norton or Mcafee to remove the worm files from your computer. THEN you can go to microsoft to get the new security patch at the link above.

emac: The cure
For $800 you can have an emac, though (with the built-in monitor, if you're comparing prices). If you are a student or a teacher, they are even cheaper through the Apple educational discount plan. Plus they have finance plans. Sometimes you can just go to your local college bookstore and order one through them, whether you go to school there or not.

Personal Tech

No such thing as a "secret" web pageSeen on Slashdot: "It is almost impossible to keep a web server secret by not publishing any links to it. As soon as someone follows a link from your "secret" server to another web server, it is likely that your "secret" URL is in the referer tag, and it can be stored and possibly published by the other web server in its referer log. So ... it is likely that Googlebot and other "web crawlers" will find it [by crawling the referrer logs of other sites. No links in and no links out is safer, but not foolproof.]

Cybercafes considered unsafe for private computing

CNN.com - Kinko's spy case: Risks of renting PCs - Jul. 23, 2003

Easy Everything, now with a site in NY as well, essentially netboots all the PCs after each user so even if the previous performed some evil, the next user gets a new system free of any malware.

That type of policy still won't protect you against a cybercafe's own surveillance though, and there are things your parents, work, and school might be doing also, like

Microsoft security flaw considered national security threat
"Last year, Microsoft issued about 70 such patches; so far this year, it has issued nearly 30."

"The government is particularly worried about the [latest] flaw because it could potentially affect so many users. As many as 75 percent of all computers connected to the Internet rely on the flawed versions of Microsoft's software, Homeland Security spokesman David Wray said."

Use Windows Update on your machine to get and install patches from Microsoft. Turn off virus protection before installing anything.
