ARTIST CREATES VIRTUAL SUBWAY AT ART MUSEUM
For New York City native Muriel Magenta, riding the subway to elementary
and high school was a place to think, do homework, socialize with friends...
in her words, "A system to pass from one part of my life to another."
Now an artist whose "canvas" is the computer, Magenta has retrieved these
childhood memories to create a virtual subway, complete with platforms,
trains, billboards, blue-tiled walls and passengers.
"TOKEN CITY," a multimedia installation of video projections and multiple soundtracks, opens at the ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM on AUG. 9 and continues through SEPT. 30. Visitors entering the gallery are surrounded by a virtual subway created by two 10-foot-by-14-foot screens and one 10-foot-by-8-foot screen. Each screen is projected from the back using state-of-the-art equipment.
According to Museum Curatorial Assistant John Spiak, who organized the exhibition, violinists will play while graffiti artists like Such, who hit up our roof back in 1995 (http://asuam.fa.asu.edu/grafs/noe.htm), will be drawing in their black books.
