REAS
"The subject matter is often the funny details in sometimes tragic situations. Someone told me it feels like putting a one night stand in the back of your mind as you walk out the door." Todd James is an artist and designer who lives and works in New York City. He is the creator of the cartoon series Zoo Force and Rap Toons for the design firm Funny Garbage. His collaboration with artists Barry McGee (TWIST) and Steve Powers (ESPO) entitled "Street Market" has been exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Deitch Projects in New York, and the Parco Gallery in Tokyo. The exhibition will go to Italy in May for the Venice Bienale. His work has also been exhibited at Enrico Coveri, 207 Gallery and Alleged Gallery. Last year saw the publication of his limited edition coloring book, "Attitude Dancer", and earlier this year he participated in the Keith Haring Foundation's "Untitled 2001" Art Event in Tokyo, Japan. His clients include Atlantic Records, CartoonNetwork.com, Def Jam Records, Wieden & Kennedy, The Source magazine, Virgin Records, the Beastie Boys, Eminem and Iggy Pop.
DOZE GREEN
Born and raised in Manhattan, Doze was one of the pioneers of Hip-Hop culture. He started writing graffiti in 1974 and subway trains in 1976. He joined the Rock Steady Crew in 1977 and started dancing at art exhibitions and galleries of Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan. During this time Doze was also attending the High School of Art and Design, where artists such as Lady Pink, Daze, Ernie Valdez, Seen TC5, Mr. Wiggles, Mare 139, and numerous others went. In 1982 Doze showed his artwork at the Fun Gallery. After appearances in major movies such as Flashdance, Style Wars, and Wildstyle, the Rock Steady Crew was launched into the limelight. From B-boy to graf legend Doze has gone from tagging the hallways of South Bronx projects to designing for Kikwear and Ecko. He's been featured on dozens of exhibitions in art galleries from both coasts. "Probably the biggest challenge and the most fun is painting live, there's a communion between the audience, the DJ and myself. The DJ is feeding off the music, and if the crowd is hype, he goes that extra mile. The same applies to me."

RIP Meta (Margaret Kilgallen)
How to send support to Asha, her baby girs, and a loving remembrance from Matt Houston:
And her outdoor work (from Nothingbutfr8s)
[NYT obituary by ROBERTA SMITH, requires (free) registration]
Excerpt:
"Margaret Kilgallen, an artist who contributed to the vibrant fusion of graffiti art, folk art, painting and installation art that emerged in San Francisco in the 1990's, died Thursday in San Francisco. She was 33. The cause was complications of breast cancer, her family said.
Ms. Kilgallen was born in Washington and raised in Kensington, Md. She received a B.A. in studio art and printmaking at Colorado College before moving to San Francisco. Exposed to bluegrass music as a child, Ms. Kilgallen was a skillful banjo player. In San Francisco she took up surfing, becoming equally adept. In 1990 she met her future husband, Barry McGee (Twist)4, also a surfer, and one of several young painters showing in galleries and painting noncommissioned murals on city walls. She and Mr. McGee, who were married in 1999, became part of a circle that included the artists Chris Johanson, Phil Frost, Ed Templeton and Thomas Campbell. Ms. Kilgallen eventually painted hundreds of murals around San Francisco, most of which have been painted over. [...]
She is survived by her husband [and their] daughter, Asha, who was born on June 7 ... ."

Dutch graffiti artist Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA, studied Industrial Design Engineering and emerged with a unique painting style: his 3-d abstract lettering now resembles
isometric plans for high-tech vehicles or architecture from the future.
In 1998, "Masterplan" was a collaboration with architect Marc Mauer for a large-scale architectural competition called "Het-Wilde-Wonen" (Wild Living). DELTA's work was recently published in the 1999 book Scrawl by Booth-Clibborn Editions, he designed the album cover for DJ Vadim's USSR: Life from the Other Side, and designed packaging for Japanese magazine Gasbook, issue 7. Delta's artwork will appear on four snowboards in the 2001 line for Ride Snowboards.

TV: Mare 139 created the new BET awards
Legendary Graffiti Artist Carlos "MARE 139" Rodriguez Crafts Unique Masterpieces for Inaugural BET Awards on June 19
Carlos "MARE 139" Rodriguez is founder and president of Mirame Media Group, Inc. www.miramemedia.com a consulting, design and development studio for internet solutions and multimedia. Mirame Media has teamed up with BET to launch RAP-IT-UP.com an HIV/AIDS awareness website for the African American Community. Clients include Tribeca Films, Ecko Unlimited Clothing, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and other corporate enterprises.
Rodriguez's roots are in the very early years of Hip Hop culture in the South Bronx, since 1976 he has participated and expanded the methodology of expressing and educating artists and people about Urban Culture. He and his brother Randy are regarded as pioneers and the first to bring Hip Hop culture online with the launch of voiceoftheghetto.com in 1990. He is also regarded as a pioneer and the preeminent sculptor of his generation for transforming Wild Style subway art into sculptural objects. Since 1985 his sculptures have been exhibited and collected for their uniqueness and importance to the culture.
His approach to the BET award was inspired by a new concept called "transitism" which deals with the intellectual interpretation of Wild Style art, movement, forms and light. "Elements of Transitism were utilized in the creation of BET's award", said Rodriguez. "I wanted the award to allude to excellence, understating a rise above diversity with the intersecting of star powers to represent will and force."

The HipHop Summerschool will offer approximately 100 classes and in addition to the usual topics associated with HipHop like DJing, MCing, BreakDance and Graffiti, the HipHop Summerschool will also offer topics which address HipHop as über-lifestyle. Classes like management, self-direction, and tax laws, to "How do I find a job?," respect, hacky-sack sewing, a cooking class, and of course, discussion groups covering all possible topics associated with HipHop culture, including for example, women in HipHop.
This workshop is being organized by Esher, alias Frank Lämmer and represents one of the most spectacular and interesting aspects of this HipHop event. The graffiti artists committed to this event represent the best of the international graffiti art scene and their eyecatching works have a special importance for the young fans in Germany's graffiti metropolis--Berlin.
The artists selected will be a major attraction for the public, and include national and international figures like Shek, Dejoe, Graco, Chester, Skywise, Toons, Moosca, Kacao, KeenxGraffX, Akim, Zast, Boris, Ish, Dane, Casco, Esher, Mars, Parasit, Work, Mythos, Large, Sat_1, Loomit, Codeak, Daim, Zwei, Ben Zedz, Zender, Twist, and many others.
In spontaneous spray activities, participants will explore the origins and character of graffiti as well as the abstraction of letters and communication. Two vans for the Carnival of Culture will be decorated.
Graffiti lecturers and activists will offer workshops in the HipHop Summerschool including Cooking for sprayers, Nude Drawings from Models for Sprayers, Character Drawings from Professionals, and many more.
All works will be documented (Film, Video, and Photography) and collected in catalog form on CD-Rom and in the internet.

A mega-graffiti placed on one of the biggest and most famous dock in the port of Hamburg, performed by several german and international artists.
Daily updates from the development of the mega-graffiti, maybe little video-portraits of the artists as well can be seen on http://www.livetravel.net
This event was organized over 2.5 years by getting up (especially by Daddy Cool and DAIM) and the city of Hamburg. The artists started Friday March 23, preparing and then spraying first parts of the graffiti on a big wall of an industrial building in Hamburg. The wall is 6x100 meters!
The creation of the Graffiti showing "Hamburg and its partner cities" will last about two weeks. Afterwards a company in Vienna, Austria specializing in blow-up outdoor posters printed the graffiti in 4X size(!) on special strong material. This final production is displayed at the port of Hamburg on Dock 10.

Modart - Boarding for Breast Cancer 2001.
The breastmolds that we auction, created on women of all shapes and then customized by artists of all types, are physical representations of a simple truth: while breast cancer attacks all women without prejudice, it is also the powerful individual present in all women that will conquer it.

Remember! Every tag found in such a prestigious building will compromise next year's World Spray.
In the year 2000, with more than 6000 people, no tags were found in the building area of the convention. We thank you, that's the only way to help our culture.
