Supafly 6

In December 2003 the supafly 6 comes on the net. We done supafly in Helsinki, Finland. Supafly 6 a week-long event that gathers together young artist painters, breakdancers and rappers from all over. You can follow both live broadcasts and recordings on our webpages. So supafly 6 is definitely coming.

Supafly 6 starts on 15.12.03 and lasts until 21.12.03 (week 51). Live broadcasts start from 14.oo to 21.00 and other times a random playlist is used.

The material used consists - among other things - of graffiti, breakdance, rap and interviews. Supafly 6 can only be followed on different medias, the main focus being on the internet. A few of the broadcasts can be followed live on our webpages but most of them are available for viewing as different kinds of recordings (pictures, videos, mp3's).

graffiti
All works are done on a concretewall in front of videocameras. After the graffiti is finished it's photographed with digital cameras and then the wall is covered with white paint for the next painter. You can view the broadcast through webcams or as a realvideo on Free Your Mind - www.yle.fi/free

Chris Mendoza / Kenji Hirata - UNIVERSAL APPEAL

barnstormersinnyc2003x.gif

Exhibition dates Nov. 1 - Features paintings by artists Chris Mendoza and Kenji Hirata. They have long collaborated in the studio as well as in public painting and film projects - the show brings their work together for the first time in this exhibition of recent color work - ranging from smaller paintings to large mural-style canvases. Mendoza and Hirata also created artwork for a special edition of 20 silkscreen prints by Cannonball Press for the show.

Chris Mendoza is a New York based painter whose work draws from the culture of his native Nicaragua and the influences of New York and Miami. As a founding member of the Inkheads and an influential member of the Barnstormers, Mendoza has been involved in collaborative art making for over a decade.

Kenji Hirata is a New York based painter from Nagasaki, Japan. As an original member of the Barnstomers, Hirata has created large-scale public mural paintings in New York, Miami, and the rural town of Cameron, NC, where the artist collective was founded.

"Disposable"

disp2webx.jpg

From the graphics and logos to the culture and style, skateboarding and art go hand in hand! Unfortunatey, artwork on skateboards (no matter how dope) isn't ment to last past the 1st grind, making the art 'disposable'. Aerosol Warfare is taking that concept and flipping it inside out! This time around, the Art on the board is the focus and not the gnarly tricks you can do with it.

Our 'art call' was very successful (Thanks in part to the good people at ArtCrimes) and we are proud to present a wide variety of talent for your viewing pleasure! From Portland to Chicago, Seattle to Hollywood and every city in bewteen! *We are still accpeting Boards thru Halloween, Oct 31st.

Most Wanted: Alex Fakso

HENCHMEN AND CRONIES

henchmen-and-cronies-webx.jpg

The Community Self- Determination Institute (CSDI) and Artists With A Vision premiers an exhibit of characters by a cast of characters, MIDZT, GZER, VYAL, and DUCE, some of Los Angeles' most prolific graffiti artists. In the neck-breaking speed at which graffiti art evolves, characters play vital roles in the development of this urban aesthetic.

Incarnated in spraypaint, acrylics and other media, these characters embody the artists' often comical and satirical worldview. Whether they are twisted, surreal visions or poignant political criticisms, they reflect both the darkest and most light-hearted aspects of our humanity. As simple one-dimensional characters or complex multi-colored dioramic images, on walls or on canvases, graffiti characters demand attention and challenge spectators with their wit.

Once again, Artists With A Vision and CSDI brings you another show that will rattle your senses with mind-blowing art straight from L.A. As always, music will be spinning, poetry will be popping with live spinning and an open mike session. Come one, come all.

From Sept.8 to Nov.7 the 18th Street Arts Complex will be hosting a show of Graffiti blackbook drawings by noted L.A. Graffiti Artists entitled FLIP THE SCRIPT. The Blackbook has long been a part of Graffiti, or Writing, culture since its earliest days, and the ideas, tags and sketches found within the Writer's book have, over time, become works in and of themselves. This is the first show of its kind in Los Angeles that will showcase selected blackbook works from the private archives of Writers who open up their books and share a bit of history, secret styles, punch lines and moments of spontaneity that are as much a part of the culture of Writing as the spraycan itself. The term 'FLIP THE SCRIPT' comes from the fact that Writers take mainstream fonts, or scripts, and flip them (i.e. co-opt them) into their own visual language, the backbone of Graffiti's codified communication aesthetic. These processes usually begin in the Blackbook and often end up transforming the urban landscape. The show is curated by Nuke UTI, Duke K2S-STN and Tempt K2S-STN, and contains over 55 works stemming from 1986-present, done in a variety of media all centered around the pen, with a wide array of style, philosophy and approach. There are three generations represented in the show (80's, 90's and the present), including some of L.A.'s best and most diverse Writers and crews. The reception for the show will be held on Oct. 18 from 7PM-Midnite, with live music and drinks. There will also be limited edition signed and numbered prints of each artist's work for sale at the show.

Without you, our failure is their success (the powers that be), but like with any new venue, the proof is in the belief.

If you're a singer, rapper, model, poet or aspiring actor, writer, director, producer or filmmaker, the Urban Literary Film Festival is North Carolinas first venue to tap into the market that so many HipHop artist have already paved the way within.

PLACE TBA (we've got a local group who's trying to steal our idea), so we will update the site soon, but for now, it's deep cover!!! ?

DUROCIA.COM AND NYC LASE PRESENTS

THE 1ST ANNUAL BACK TO THE STREETS NEW YORK CITY FESTIVAL

SUNDAY OCTOBER 5TH 2003
12pm to 6pm and the party continues all night

"Street Jams" were very popular in New York City back in the mid to late 70s. It was a venue where the best of the best (DJs, Breakers, and MCs/Rappers) would show off their skills. These events would draw crowds in the thousands. One, because it was free and secondly, because the purity of the street culture was at its finest in its natural environment -- the street!

These type of gatherings have been extinct for nearly 30 years. But due to the world wide resurgence of New York's original street culture, it is now time to resurrect the street jam and take it to the next level as a full blown festival. This will happen by including live graffiti, street fashions, car displays, old and new school DJs, break dance battles, indoor and outdoor festivities such as film screenings, underground art shows, live musical performances from the legends of yesterday and today, and an area on the street for various companies to promote and sell their products.

• DJ Kool Herc (the original father of hip hop)
• DJ Grimmace
• NYC LASE (NYC's original graffiti street bomber)
• Live Painting by World's Famous Graffiti Tats Cru
• All out break dance battle between The Breaks Cru (NYC) and The Floor Lords (Boston)
• Live Performance by the Lordz of Brooklyn (who have just dropped their latest album, "Graffiti Roc", worldwide and who after touring on the Vans Warped Tour are currently on the Sprite remix tour)
• Special appearance by "The Vanilla Pepsi Hydraulics Truck" as seen in TV commercials
• Montana Spray Paint will be available for just $3.50 a can!!!!!!!
• Free Mass Appeal Magazines, Posters, and limited edition T-Shirts for $12 (sold elsewhere for $30)

The World's Best Beatboxer @ Wales' Best Hip-hop Night

(Welsh Music Awards)
Thursday October 2nd 2003

Killa Kela has the ability to make up to 6 noises at once! Incorporating versions of Sade, Soul II Soul and Jeru The Damaja alongside some blistering Hip-hop and Drum and Bass workouts. His rendition of Mary J Blige's Be Happy has him beatboxing, scratching and singing the chorus and verses, all at the same time, using just his mouth and a microphone. It really has to be seen to be believed.

With such a buzz currently surrounding the Rock Steady Crew member and ex- Scratch Pervert this night is promised to be even greater than the last time he amazed the masses at the Toucan Club. Bringing with him one of the UK's most exciting new deejay talents DJ SKELETRIX for a 2 hour set mixing up turntable trickery with his mind-boggling vocal routines, Kela is set to prove the reason why he is without a doubt the best beat-boxer in the world.

THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS EXHIBITION

Mon - Sat 12 - 6 Private View Saturday September 6th, doors 7.30pm

FREE DERRY COMES TO LONDON

The Horse Hospital is honoured to present Northern Ireland's The Bogside Artists. The group, Tom Kelly, Kevin Masson and William Kelly, are famous for their murals in the area of Derry, Northern Ireland, known as Free Derry Corner. These large-scale murals explicitly depict key images of the Troubles in the city since 1968. This exhibition of their work is a chronicle of those events within the struggle that the artists consider to have been the most significant during the last thirty years. Displayed in installation as vast 12 x 9 foot vinyl hangings, the original murals were created as powerful re-presentations of a photographic moment of profound local symbolism, funded through donations of paint, supplies and door to door collections from the residents of the buildings they grace. Although the exhibition has toured widely throughout the world to great success, this is the first show in England for the artists, as the material has hitherto been seen as too delicate and controversial for exhibition within mainland Britain. The works are a moving testament to the power of art as historical document; the importance of documentation within the history of art, and the power of art within society; a creative process that situates the past as something we must acknowledge within the present, and from which we can draw strength. "We do not play down the contextual significance that lends itself to the work. Neither are we militant propagandists, tribal fantasists or proponents of the us-versus-them delusion that is still causing such evils around the world." Tom Kelly, Kevin Masson and William Kelly : The Bogside Artists.
