The Main Toolbar

The main toolbar contains controls that let you use Galeon to browse the Web more efficiently.

You can enable, disable, or rearrange the order of the items appearing in the toolbar. These and other related options are described in the Section called Toolbars in the chapter called Setting Galeon Preferences. Additionally, a context menu allowing control of the appearance of the toolbar is available by clicking a blank space on the toolbar with the right mouse button. An alphabetical listing of the controls, along with brief descriptions of their functions, follows.

Back button

Clicking the Back button will go back to the previous page in the browser's history. To get a list of pages in the browser's back history, press and hold the right mouse button when the mouse pointer is over the button.

Back History button

Clicking the Back history button displays a menu listing the pages in the browser's back history. The menu is identical to the one that is displayed when right-clicking the Back button.

Bookmarks button

Pressing the Bookmarks button toggles the display of the Bookmarks Editor dock.

Drag handle icon

Galeon supports Drag and Drop (DnD) extensively. If you have the appropriate option set, as described in the Section called Mouse in the chapter called Setting Galeon Preferences, pressing and holding the left mouse button on the Link drag icon (blue globe with a red arrow) allows you to drag a copy of the URL to your desktop, a terminal window, the bookmarks editor or temporary bookmarks window, another Galeon window (or tab label in tabbed mode), or any other DnD enabled application. You can also drag links directly from web pages.

Find entry

The Find entry can be used to find text within the current page. Typing text into the entry and pressing Enter repeatedly will cycle through the matching text in the page by highlighting it. If no matches are found, nothing will happen.

The Find entry also keeps a history of previous searches.

Forward button

Clicking the Forward button will go forward to the next page in the browser's history. To get a list of pages in the browser's forward history, press and hold the right mouse button when the mouse pointer is over the button.

Forward History button

Clicking the Forward history button displays a menu listing the pages in the browser's forward history. The menu is identical to the one that is displayed when right-clicking the Forward button.

Go button

Clicking the Go button will load whatever location is currently in the location bar. Clicking the button with the middle mouse button will load the page in a new window or tab, useful for cloning the current browser.

History button

Pressing the History button toggles the display of the History dock.

Home button

Clicking the Home button will load your home page, which can be set as described in the Section called General in the chapter called Setting Galeon Preferences. Clicking the button with the middle mouse button will load your home page in a new window or tab.

Location entry

The Location entry is where you enter URLs that you want to visit. Once you have typed an address into the entry, pressing Enter or clicking on the Go button will load the page.

The Location entry also keeps a history of previous addresses that were typed into it. Pressing the arrow button will display a list of recently typed URLs. If the Go button is turned on, clicking on an item in this list will replace the contents of the entry bar but will not load the page. If the Go button is turned off, the page will automatically be loaded.

Finally, the location entry supports autocompletion. Once you start typing in the location bar, your history will be searched and the first possible match will be displayed. If this is not the URL you had in mind, continue typing or hit the Tab key. If you hit the Tab key, a list of all possible matches will be display below the location bar. Click on an item or use the up/down arrow keys and press Enter to load the desired URL. If you have disabled autocompletion, as described in the Section called History in the chapter called Setting Galeon Preferences, hitting Tab will complete the URL that you are typing and will show the alternatives window.

New button

Clicking the New button will open a either a new window or a new tab, depending on the value of the Open in tabs by default setting on the Tabs page of the Preferences window. To choose whether the new browser should be in a window or a tab, press and hold the right mouse button when the mouse pointer is over the button and select the appropriate item from the menu that results.

Print button

Pressing the Print button displays the Print dialog, allowing you to print the current page.

Reload button

Clicking the Reload button will reload the page that is currently being viewed.

Spinner

The Spinner is the Galeon equivalent of the "throbber" in Netscape or Mozilla . During a page load, the spinner plays back an animation. Clicking on the spinner will take you to the Galeon homepage. You can change the animation that is shown, or turn off the spinner altogether, on the Toolbars page of the Preferences window.

Stop button

Pressing the Stop button immediately stops the loading of the current page.

Up button

Clicking the Up button will load the page in the next-highest directory of the current URL. For example, pressing the button while at http://www.example.com/a/b/ would cause the URL http://www.example.com/a/ to be loaded.

Zoom control spinbutton

The Zoom control spinbutton allows you to easily change the size of the fonts on the page being viewed. Pressing the up arrow will increase the size of the fonts on the page, while pressing the down arrow will decrease the size of the fonts on the page. Additionally, you can set the zoom to an arbitrary number by typing in the entry field.
