Tools for Taking Screenshots

There are many tools for taking screenshots on Linux. The Screenshooter Applet is a very convenient tool for taking screenshots. The GIMP and xv are two other popular tools. In some situations, the command line tool, xwd is useful, especially in combination with the sleep command.

For dialogs which are tricky to grab such as the dialog you see when you quit GNOME, the Xnest application is useful. It allows you to run an entire X and GNOME session in a window. It is also helpful if you would like to take a screenshot of your whole desktop and make that desktop a customized size, since your Xnest window can be any size you want.

Image Manipulation Tools

The most common tool for manipulating images on Linux is the GIMP. You will need some of the sophistocated features of this application which are not available in other tools for Linux.
