Text presented to the press conference
The Economic Commission for Asia and Pacific ESCAP and the United Nations Trade Point Development Centre UNTPDC-UNCTAD in cooperation with the Bangkok Trade Point are organizing the United Nations Conference on the Effective Use of Information Technologies for Trade and Investment on 9 and 10 May 1995 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.
The main objective of this two-day Conference would be, as a follow up to the successful conclusion of the United Nations World Symposium on Trade Efficiency held in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. in October 1994, to create awareness and promote the use of information technologies to facilitate international trade and investments. The Conference specifically aims at:
- Providing opportunities to learn and exchange ideas on new and existing methods of utilizing the latest tools available in information technologies among government, private sector, and trade and investments-related organizations; and
- Demonstrating how information technologies can facilitate and assist in information exchange and dissemination in international trade and investments.
In addition to the representatives from various trade and investment-related organizations of Thailand and Asia Pacific, the Conference is open to the general public. Further, representatives from the Trade Points, already operating or in the process of setting up in the Asia-Pacific region, namely in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Vietnam, are also participating.
To promote and demonstrate products and services relating to trade and investment applications through modern technology, an Exhibition will take place concurrently with the Conference.
The Conference programme includes:
(1) Trade Efficiency in Thailand and Its Implementation for International Trade and Investment
(2) Trade Efficiency and Use of Trade Points in Asia and the Pacific
(3) Trade Process Re-Engineering and Reduction of Trade Transaction Cost and Time.
(4) Linking the Global Trade Point Network.
