Virrat (9000 inh.) is the northernmost and the largest municipality in the province Häme. Its neighbouring provinces are Turku and Pori, Vaasa and Central Finland.

Virrat which is situated at the junction of highway 23 (which runs through the Finnish Lake district from Pori to Joensuu) and Road 66, the word "Virrat" stands for the hundreds of lakes and dozens of streams.

During the summertime, steamship Tarjanne departs from Virrat and heads for Tampere via a ship route Runoilijan Tie, the Poet´s Way. S/S Tarjanne departs from Virrat on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 10.45 a.m.

Laborforce distribution in Virrat: service industries 44%, secondary produstion 32% and primary production 24%.

The biggest private employers are Inka Oy, Kiiltoplast Oy and G.W. Sohlberg Oy/Finncont.
