There are 35 cities and municipalities in the area of Tampere Region which covers around 15,000 squarekilometers of land and lakes. The capital of the region is Tampere which is the industrial and cultural center of the area. The southern parts and the area around the capital Tampere are dominated by business activity, whereas the more remote parts of the region have maintained their authentic rural atmosphere. There is however vital small and medium-scale business activity also in the remote areas, and you can find magnificient rural surroundings right outside the city boundaries. For over 200 years, Tampere region has been the industrial powerhouse of Finland. It has more than 600 internationally operating companies. Tampere Expertise Centre provides activities in mechanical engineering, information technology and health care technology. All these activities are supported by research activities of Tampere University of Technology, Tampere University and Technical Research Centre with e.g. Tampere Automation Centre and Information Technology Laboratory.
