Pälkäne is situated on the highway number 12, only 35 kilometers to the south-east of Tampere, capital of the region. Pälkäne is embedded in the meeting point of three great lakes, Lake Pälkänevesi, Lake Mallasvesi and Lake Roine -- you are never far away from water in Pälkäne. There is a wide range of medium-size industry in Pälkäne. At the same time, around 25 % of the people still get their income from agriculture and forestry. The total number of inhabitants lies around 4100.

Buildings, happenings: St. Michael's ruined church from the 15th century and the new church from the year 1839. Nature and other activities: The River Kostianvirta in the center of Pälkäne: the birth of the river in 1604 was a major incident in the natural history of the area, as the waters of the Lake Pälkänevesi in the north forged their way down into the Lake Mallasvesi in the south. Grand ridge sceneries are typical of Pälkäne: the most spectacular is the Sydänharju Ridge with its deep caves (the deepest 30 meters) formed by the ice age. For an independent hiker, a tour in the Laippa wilderness offers magnificient natural experiences. The lakes have wonderful routes for rowing ang canoeing. Also available: slalom skiing, cross-country skiing, speed skating, riding, tennis, swimming and other water sports.


Products of Pälkäne: There is nothing like the taste of fresh Finnish strawberries! There are also numerous farms selling biodynamic vegetables. A nice present to take with you back home: the local sweet-sour rye bread, or currant wine or other berry wines from the Rönnvik vineyard; there's a shop in connection with the vineyard. There's also a factory shop of Veikka-Neule Oy selling high-quality knitwear.
