Orivesi is the hometown of around 9200 inhabitants. This dynamic town lies embedded in the northeast corner of Tampere Region, only half an hours ride away from Tampere. One of the special characteristics of Orivesi is its rocky ground containing several valuable minerals, including recent discoveries of gold; no wonder Orivesi has gained fame as the "Finnish Klondyke".

There are over 220 lakes and ponds in Orivesi. In the north-east there are vast wilds with innumerable rocks and lakes. The largest moor, Siikaneva is protected and widely recongnized because of its diversity. The virgin forest of Pukala has marked camping places. At the end of the beautiful Eräjärvi cape there is a pre-historic place of sacrifice. The natural park of Sinivuori is a beautiful example of research areas left in wild state.For those interested in fishing and boating, the Recreation Center of Rönni provides a marina for guest boat parking, and a fine beach. Living Shoemaking Tradition
The first shoe factory was established in Orivesi in 1911. Even today the town is one of the core areas of Finnish shoe industry: shoes are being produced in more than twenty factories in Orivesi area. Koskenjalka Museum presents the history of shoe industry. In the old factory building there are also an art gallery and factory shops selling shoes -- a pair Orivesi shoes is a good choice for souvenir to take with you back home!

Orivesi Summer -- Culture for Your Pleasure
The summer courses of Oriveden Suvi draw in lovers of music, literature and visual arts from all over Finland. Also language courses and seminars on various themes stand on the program every summer. The summer concerts of Klemetin kesä focus on choir music and music courses. Open air summer theatre performances enrich the lively and merry atmosphere of Orivesi summer. The first Finnish summer art exhibition was arranged in Purnu, Orivesi in 1967.

Rönni Recreation Center and Lehtola Dancing Pavillion: summer dancing on saturdays. Sport Center: the building is famous for its unusual architecture, built in 1988. Orivesi Church, one of the first modern churches in Finland, built in 1961. Auvinen Handicrafts Center: arts and crafts shop, exhibitions, tourist information. Paltanmäki Museum of Local History and Culture: an open air museum. Eräjärvi Wooden Church built in 1821. Eräjärvi Stone Museum situated in an old granary, presenting minerals and the history of quarrying industry.
