I have been using external writers (a 4X and an 8X) from 'Smart & Friendly'.
They came with a good software set and have worked flawlessly with varying

Subject: (A) John Madden 2000

Dear Digest readers,
I was so disgusted at how slowly John Madden 2000 played on my
Powerbook G3/233 with 512k backside cache when I first got it, I
almost decided to return it, and then decided I should wait till I
could afford a newer machine. Well it's been nearly half a year
since then, and while I hadn't yet gotten a newer machine, I thought
I'd try it again considering all the upgrades I got in software.
And what do you know, it actually worked if I switched from OpenGL to
Software rendering in the preferences.

Now why is OpenGL 90% slower than the built-in software rendering?
I mean I was getting video that simply jumped from frame 1 to frame 9
to frame 15, then frame 60. Now while I admit this Powerbook only
has an ATI LT with 4 MB of VRAM, OpenGL is Apple's darling rendering
engine, or so I had assumed. Aspyr could teach the gaming industry
a thing or two about rendering images. If we all depended on
OpenGL people with older G3s and older video cards would be left out.
As it is, at least Aspyr has taken a stance that if you don't have
the 16MB videocard you can still get the rendering through other
software.

So let's all get this software, and tell Aspyr we'd like to thank
them for actually making American Football available for the Mac.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

I recently got a Yamaha 8424. The burner itself is nice and fast
and quite reliable. It's fast at audio extraction, and the SCSI-3
interface works well with older SCSI-2 boxes.

Generally it's getting very good comments. See, for example:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/hardware/yamaha8424s/index.shtml
as well as the newsgroup news:alt.comp.periphs.cdr .

As for burning software, Adaptec's Toast customers have been
having bad luck lately, and they've been cutting back on features
in the OEM version. Many people seem to like Discribe.

Subject: Can't search for recent files on Info-Mac?

Hi,

For some reason, searching for any recently uploaded file (since around the
beginning of year 2000?) on the official Info-Mac Archive, from either
<http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html>
or
<http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/SearchForm.html>
always returns: "No matches", or at the best any previous version of the
file when it exists.

A while ago, I already sent some feedback to the HyperArchive Admins at
<hyperarchive@lcs.mit.edu>, but only got an automatically generated
all-purpose answer. I wonder whether I'm the only one experiencing such
problem? Could it be a year 2K bug?

Thanks.

I've had good luck with the Matsushita CW-7502 mechanism, which is used
in at least one Panasonic-branded drive of some years ago. It's a 4x write,
8x read, which serves my needs admirably.
More recent drives are probably what you're looking at, though. You
might be helped by Mike Richter's "CD Burning Primer" page:
<http://mrichter.simplenet.com> (unless it's moved).
At the time I was on the Adaptec CD-R mailing list, many people seemed
to agree that Plextor drives were da bomb. That means very good indeed, if
anyone still has some doubt. :)

Subject: Starting up from DVD-RAM disks.

I'm getting nowhere fast trying to start up my G4/450 (System 9.0.4) from a
DVD-RAM disk. I've initialised it using Drive Setup, updated drivers, and
copied all my system software to it (plus a couple of applications) from the
hard disk. Drive Setup recognises the DVD-RAM disk as a startup disk, as
does the Startup disk control panel.

I've tried: holding down 'c' (which works on CD-ROMs such as the G4
software install disk); using command-opt-shift-delete to bypass the hard
disk on startup; and changing the startup disk in the control panel on both
the hard disk and the DVD-RAM disk. No success!

any suggestions? TIA.

Folks,

If you have some new software in different languages and in 68k and PPC
versions, may I suggest you post just one message.

You could end your announcement with "this is available for 68k and PPC in
English, German and French".

IMHO this is more efficient than posting several identical messages with
different subject lines to specify languages and platforms.
