If you use Norton Utilities 3.5.1 on a G3 you will find that you cannot
boot from the CDROM as it is the 7.6.1 OS onboard and that will not work
with G3. You, therefore, must copy the various utilities from the CDROM to
floppies or other media with additionally, ObjectSupportLib which in theory
is no longer needed with OS8 but needs to be present as a folder in the
extensions folder or on the floppy with speed disk to use the speed disk
utilities. It works fine this way though I am more than a bit miffed at
having to go back to this primitive manner to cleanse and massage my HD
after spending a bundle on a CDROM that lasted me less than three months
before becoming obsolete. I do hope Norton will give me a cheap upgrade?

The easiest way I know of to get the Sound Manager extension is to
download QuickTime. I believe that the QuickTime 2.5 installer (available
from Apple's website or <http://quicktime.apple.com>) checks your current
version and will update you if necessary. I think you may need a 68020 or
better machine to run later versions of the Sound Manager though.

After upgrading to Mac OS 8 on my PowerCenter Pro 210 (7200-based?), I now =
have 2 extensions which seem to be different versions of the same thing, =
both with the same logo, both saying Mac OS 8.0 in the Get Info boxes:

ATI Graphics Accelerator, v1.2.2, 2/28/97, c Apple Computer & c ATI =

Are they the same or different? Do I need both? Thanks for any help. =

I doubt that A/UX is supported anymore, but it did give you a unix/X
windows environment on a Mac with Mac look and feel. MacLinux is available
from Apple, a lot of folks are using Linux on a variety of boxes.

It is possible to convert the movies, but the result is less than optimal.
However, there is a simple solution. As much as I hate to recommend any
Microsoft product, Internet Explorer will do this. Simply drop the .avi
file on an open IE browser window. (Actually, you can just drop it on the
IE icon, but it's simpler if it is already running.)
I only offer this solution because IE is free.

If the standard Microsoft Word 5.1a thesaurus and spelling dictionary
packages are not meeting your needs, get new dictionaries from Alki
Software <support@alki.com>. These packages contain tens of thousands of
additional synonyms and spelling options, and are specifically designed to
replace Word's standard implementation. I've been using them without a
hitch since 1991.

If you'd like to add synonyms, just go to Word 5.1a Preferences->Spelling
and create a new Custom Dictionary, making sure it's active (checkmark on
left column). After that, just add new terms to it as you run a spell check
(select it by name in the popup menu called "Add words to:", visible in the
spell checking dialog window).

In our Macintosh labs at the university, we use MacControl very
successfully to protect the computers from either malicious or inadvertent
damage. My windoze friends would like something similar for their labs,
but of course have found nothing that is as easy to install and maintain as
the products available for the Mac. The primary issue is keeping the user
interface as natural as possible.
Do you have suggestions for protecting W95 machines in a lab setting?

I am just in the beginning learning stages of utilizing the power of
AppleScript (I am learning by the "follow the leader" method). One thing that
I would like help on is creating a script (to be used as part of a larger
script) that will log onto a particular server (in this case as a
"Guest"). If it is doable with AppleScript as is (MacOS 8.0), then I am unable
to figure it out. It looks like I need an OSAX file that will accomodate
me.
If anyone out there know how to write it straight up, or if there is an
OSAX file available, could someone please point me in the right direction.

I too had a recent unhappy experience with Shreve.
I needed a lightweight b&w printer.
Shreve Systems advertised (in MACWEEK) a NEW StyleWriter 1200. I ordered
one.
It arrived in the original carton with all cables,toner, manual and one
year Apple warranty.
But out of the box is was printing much too light. Tried cleaning,
playing with the settings et al. Nothing.
When I ordered the printer from Shreve the salesman assured me that a NEW
ink cartridge would be included because one that was several years old
(as is this printer) would surely be dried out.
When I called Shreve tech support and customer service to report the
problem both claimed to know nothing of a new ink cartridge being
included, and told me that the unit was under Apple warranty. "Call them."
Predictably Apple said the warranty does not cover the ink cartridge.
They had no control over how a dealer handles such a disposable item.
After I explained that Shreve would do nothing, and after a 45 minute
wait on the Apple Customer Service line, Apple agreed to send me a new
cartridge at no cost.
Hurray, Apple. Boo, Shreve!!
My unhappy experience with Shreve dictates I will NEVER use them again.
And if Apple had not sent me a new toner cartridge I would have simply
told VISA to cancel my charge and told Shreve to pick up the printer at
their expense.
No excuse for that kind of stuff!
Particularly not in the context of the superb service I have received
from many other computer mail order sources.
Interestingly, the mere mention of Shreve's name to the Apple Customer
Service folks elicited sympathetic groans.

In response I would say, I don't recommend either action. Water can short
circuit any electrical equipment. Given that keyboards contain capacitors
and transistors nowadays, any leftover current in the capacitors could end
up getting shorted as it drains out. This would leave you with a dead
keyboard that can't send a signal to the computer that you are typing to
it. As no keyboard circuitry is sealed vacuum shut, the likelihood of
water getting on the circuitry is quite high with both methods mentioned
above. Both people were lucky their keyboards didn't short. But doesn't
mean that you will be lucky too. So take head, never allow any liquids
near your computer or keyboard. These are sensitive instruments.
Especially Apple keyboards that have batteries that allow the Reset button
to start the machine, as batteries and water don't mix well either.
Instead it is safer to buy a can of compressed air (places like Radio Shack
sell these cans) and use that to get the dust out of the keyboard.
Plastic toothpicks that come with deli sandwiches are also pretty good at
prying out the dust without breaking the keys.

I continue to be less than enthralled by FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit.
I started out real happy with FWB. Back in the dark ages of 1988, we
were among the first to get a CD-ROM drive (a NEC CDR-72) hooked to our
Mac II. NEC refused to admit that it had beans to do with the driver. So
why does a get-info yield NEC as the copyright holder? Not our problem,
sir. Please bugger off.
So I got FWB's CDROM Toolkit, v109, and it did a magnificent job with
the CDR72. Then FWB offered an upgrade to v152. I accepted. The upgrade
did not acknowledge that my IIci (Yes, I had changed CPUs by then) had
a CD-ROM drive. I spent several hours on the phone with an FWB tech, the
upshot of which was that he didn't understand what was happening and that
FWB would refund my money for the 152 upgrade. They did.
Fast forward to 1997. Leslye saw the fire-sale ad for a PowerTower 225
after Brother Jobs killed clone licensing and said "I want one." Whatever
Leslye wants, Leslye gets. Clone came with FWB software for the HD and for
the Matsushita 24x CD-ROM drive.
The CDTK that came with the PowerTower (232) had a bit of a problem. It
could only see multisession CD-ROMs made on a vanilla Apple computer. Any
CD's burned via Adaptec Toast 3.5 on the clone were mostly toast. I see
the first session. You mean there are more?
All sessions were visible/accessible on my PM7300/180. Vanilla Apple. Didn't
matter if the CDR's were burned on my Apple or on the clone.
I held great hope for the new v3 CDTK. It only took me three months to get
that puppy. Two months to determine that FWB never got my mailed order. A
month after an acknowledged re-send by fax to actually get it.
And v3 isn't worth the powder it'd take to blow its nose.
Actually see a multisession CD-ROM in a Matsushita 24x drive? No. The
same CD-ROM that my 7300/180 sees admirably in an Apple-brand drive of
the Matsushita 12x persuasion.
No, folk. It ain't the drive that can't handle it. It's the FWB driver.
And no. Setting the FWB parm to "scan every track" doesn't do boo, either.
No software setting helps.
I suspect my next step is to trash the PowerTower CD-ROM drive, replace
it with an Apple-brand one, and use the Apple CD-ROM extension. Too bad
FWB, with all its experience, still can't write an effective driver.

You could avoid the pile of icons by first going to the General Control

I am trying to decide which to use, Emailer 1.1 or eudora lite 3.0 for my
mail downloads. I have a questions about each.
1. Emailer: How do I get emailer to treat the Infomac mailing as one document
and not an email with Mime enclosures? Or is this impossible with version
1.x?
2 Eudora: How do I get Eudora to automaticly sign on and download once daily
or every other day while I'm away from the machine? It seems there is only an
option to check every ___ minutes.
3. Both: how do I get both to sign off when the download is complete? Or do I
have to let the PPP software sign off after a period of inactivity?

This may not be the most elegant way but...
Drag your existing Eudora Folder out of the System Folder and put it elsewhere.
Start Eudora. Quit Eudora. This will make a new Eudora Folder in the
System Folder.
Make aliases of the Settings files in both of the Eudora Folders.
Rename the aliases "Account 1" and "Account 2" or whatever. Then drag the
aliases out onto the desktop, into your Apple Menu, or where ever.
I think you can rename either or both of the Eudora Folders if you wish.
>From now on, when you want to use your accounts, open them from the alias
of the Settings files. Oh, yeah, you've got to set up the new account,
obviously.
You may want to change the Settings alias icon to the Eudora application
icon or a generic mailbox icon via the File::Get-Info routine.

If you're using Eudora Pro 3.1, create multiple personalities (check in the
Settings dialog for the Personalities settings panel).
If you're using Eudora Light, the easiest thing is probably to duplicate
your Eudora Settings file, give it a new name, and configure the second one
to connect to your old address. You'll have to switch between them manually
by double-clicking them to launch Eudora, but they'll share the mailboxes
inthe same folder.
There are other ways of doing this, such as via AppleScript, but if it's
only for a short time, the two settings files are probably the easiest way.

Performa 6200 with a Apple 15" Multiscan monitor. The display has turned
green/yellow, and then back to normal colors, with anywhere from 5 to
45 minute intervals. It almost always starts up green and eventually may
go to normal.
A look at comp.sys.mac.hardware.video (or somethign) shows others reporting
this problem.
I tried opening my Mac up and cleaning the dust, to no avail. Is it the
monitor? Can it be fixed? Any news appreciated

"thinks" that there is an unformatted floppy in it and I keep getting a
message to format or eject it. Since there is no floppy in it, it is hard
to eject it. I tried to use a HD and 800K floppy drive from a Mac FX
and both of those repeatedly tried to eject. The system works fine if I
disconnect the drive and it is not a cable problem.
What are my chance that this is a drive problem and not a mother board
problem?
Where can I get a replacement drive?

I'd like to use a modem, localtalk, a non-localtalk printer and a MIDI port.
Obviously I use the printer port on the Mac for localtalk, but I can't plug
the other three into the modem port can I? (Especially as the modem port
is broken, but that's another story). I'd like to be able to use all four
- well maybe I'd settle for three - at once (surf the net, print a few
docs, save stuff on my other computer and play some tunes) so a simple data
switch won't do.
I understand that there is a NuBus card which adds four serial ports.
Great! That's just what I want! Alas my LC 630 doesn't have NuBus or PCI.
It has some sort of PDS slot, a comunications slot and a video stuff slot.
I suspect that the best solution would be for a box which plugs into the
ADB port and has (up to) four serial ports on it. That way I could use it
on other Macs too. Failing that a card which plugs into the 630 would do.
Does anyone know of something which will help increase the number of comms
ports on my LC630?

I have AOL as my ISP, and I think I'm ready to get out. I just bought a 56K
GlobalVillage modem to replace my Performa's internal 14.4. Thinking that my
online experiences would improve, I was sadly disappointed to learn otherwise.
Now errors type 11 are more frequent, as well as new and exciting AOL-end
problems which disconnect me with little warning. I've been told that I should
sign with someone else, but that poses a small problem. I have a web site, of
sorts, by utilizing AOL's free server space for members. I figure that if I
change to a new ISP, the only way that visitors would find a my new pages
(with the new ISP) would be if I still had a page with AOL directing them to
the new locale. Unfortunately, my finances won't allow multiple subscriptions.
THE QUESTION: Is there some HTML trickery that could send someone seeking
"old.site" to "new.site" if "old.site" no longer exists? One thousand "thank-
you's" to those who can offer advice!

The problem is that the Mac doesn't recognize the WINS (windows
internet naming system) services. WINS is Microsoft's version of DNS
that only applies to NetBIOS services. From what I found out when
dealing with this, I couldn't make the Exchange client access the
Exchange server because, if you are using IP, the Exchange server has to
be registered in the DNS. Something about the Exchange client expects to
be using DNS to resolve the name. I would assume that since you don't
have a DNS, and you have a hosts file, that should work. In the hosts
file, you should make sure that you have both the name without the domain
included, as well as the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). It should
look something like this:
knowall knowAll.apple.com. A 128.8.1.1 ; address of host
knowAll.apple.com.
Once you do that, it should work. But then again, Microsoft may have
done something that is expecting a REAL DNS. If that is the case, you
might be out of luck.
Another alternative, but probably a quite slim one, is to get the
Administrator of the Exchange server to install the Windows NT Services
for Macintosh on the Exchange server. Then you could access the server
via AppleTalk. But that may be highly unlikely if you only have one
Macintosh on your network.

Lets see, Mine came with 7.1
Then I got the Hardware Updates 1,2, and 3
Then I went to 7.5, then 7.5.1 then 7.5.3 and 55 :)
7.5.5 runs damn well on the LCIII, but 7.1 is simply FAST.
Take your pick. You'll need 12 megs to really have fun under 7.5.5, but
then again, I have 8... but I'm a masochist ;)
Oh after speeding it up to LCIII+ status (33Mhz) 7.1 won't work. Gonna
need that 7.5x or a special enabler.
(BTW its worth speeding the thing up to 33Mhz if you want to do it. 3
years later its still going strong, find it on the web)

Accordint to "Apple Spec 6/97":
7.1, 7.1.1Pro, 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.3
For system versions prior to 7.5, you would also need the System Enabler
003. You should be able to start the LC III from a System 7.5 disk tools
floppy without any additional tricks.

It should work fine with anything from MacOS 7.1 to 7.6.1, assuming you
have enough ram and hard disk space to accomdate the requirements of the
various flavors of the MacOS. For anything previous to MacOS 7.5 it might
need an enabler specific for your model, hence the error message.

Dear MacDudes,
I'm having a small dilemma with my newly acquired 7300. It seems to have a
personality of it's own, and although this is standard with any Macintosh,
this one in particular is a liitle more eccentric than others I have owned
in the past.
The problem is that the computer will often start up by itself. That's
right, by itself. I'll be siitting there reading a book, and then all of a
sudden I hear the chime and my Mac just boots itself. It was kind of cute
and humerous the first few times, however it's getting on my nerves now
and I'd like to know why it's happening.
I've made sure that my auto power on/off control panel and energy saver
panel are configured correctly and that I don't have any little utilities
that are set to automate a startup, however it still keeps doing it. If
anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this, I would love to hear from
you.

Erm, yeah, except I have heard ALOT more complaint about the diskrecovery
module in diskessentials totally destroying data on harddrives which were
working well. Or which Norton's would fix.
Norton's has a much bigger base, and I don't hear as many comments. My
conclusion is I wouldn't use DiskEssentials on MY mac ;)
BTW, always use Apple's DiskFirstAid FIRST before trying norton's

I have a Performa 6200CD with 24mb of RAM and I recently installed OS8.
It works very well but unfortunately I now have to turn VM on or else I
haven't enough RAM to launch most of my apps. So I would like to replace
the 8mb SIMM module by a 32Mb module. I went to the local mac store and
saw that such a 32Mb 72pin SIMM cost about twice as much as what seems to
be the same module in a PC store! So my question is: is it possible to
install a 32Mb 72pin SIMM module in my Mac 6200, if so should I buy EDO
RAM or standard RAM? Anyone tried to install PC memory modules in his/her
Mac yet?

Subject: PowerComputing tech support
Hello,
I bought a PowerCenterPro 240 a couple months ago and haven't been able
to get a printer working on it. First I installed Portable StyleWriter
software on it, and the SpoolLauncher file caused a system error.
Everytime I rebooted the error reappeared. I booted off the CD to remove
SpoolLauncher and got messages saying the disk was write protected.
Eventually I reformatted the disk, and I haven't tried putting the
software back on.
So I installed software for my HP DeskWriter 540. I can print, but when
I do a message keeps coming up saying there is a problem with the
connection. If I keep banging return to say OK to the messages, the
printer eventually prints, but I have to bank about a dozen times every
few lines. The printer works fine on an LC II. Does anyone have any
tips for me? Does this sound like a port problem?
I tried calling 1-800-sos-appl and they told me to call PowerComputing.
Whenever I call them I get a message saying all operators are busy and
then they disconnect me. Is PowerComputing still handling tech support?
Will Apple take over for them eventually?
I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer to get my printer working.

that's not exactly convenient.

I have Eudora installed on my laptop and my machine at home. On both
machines, in the Eudora Settings (Checking Mail), I tell it not to delete
my mail from the mail server for 21 days. Then, regardless of which machine
I sign on with, it checks and downloads whatever mail hasn't already been
downloaded to that machine. If my laptop downloads a message I've already
downloaded to my home machine, it marks it as read (rather, it doesn't mark
it as unread, with the bullet), so using the method requires you to pay
some attention to the Who, Date, and Subject lines.
