Is there a driver that will alow me to use a standerd 3 button serial PC
mouse with the Mac as multi button Mice for the Mac are very expencive.
The extra buttons would be usefull in the new MacOS 8 to bring you the
pop up menus insted of control clicking and also say the middle button
could be used as option click. It would also be usefull in programs like
Virtual PC and SoftWindows.

Many Thanks

FRUSTRATION! Can anyone help me solve this problem?

When I'm in the web browser, the letters that I write appear at the rate
of one every two or three seconds.

I'm using a Mac IISi with a 28.8 Supra modem. The Mac is using System
7.52. I'm using Netscape 3, although I've tried downgrading to Netscape
2. My Mac has 17 meg of RAM. I've tried the usual: zapping the PRAM,
rebuilding the desktop, alloting more RAM space to the application,
disabling all unnecessary extensions, connecting with a different modem,
doing a clean reinstall of the System software, and booting from another
hard drive.

The problem does not occur while using any other applications. In
addition, there's no such problem when typing mail using Netscape's Mail
features. It only behaves this way using the web browser.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone help?

I'm afraid 7.6.1 is as high as your non-PPC Centris will go right
now (even when 8.0 is available).

There is a known bug in OT 1.1.x that can cause crashes with FreePPP and
MacPPP on reconnect if AppleTalk is off. It is supposed to be fixed in OT
1.2 which will be in MacOS 8.

Below is a usenet post from Steve Dorner, one of Eudora's programmers.

The answer is that Eudora is doing nothing wrong. Turns out this is just
an OT bug when dealing with MacTCP-style LAP's like MacSLIP or FreePPP.

So, if you're having problems with crashes around connections, you have
the following workarounds available:

- Install OT/PPP (just installing it will work, even if you don't use it)
- Turn on AppleTalk (if you don't have a port to spare, ARA's remote-only
  option will do)
- Turn off native OT in Eudora using Esoteric Settings 3.1 (this loads the
MacTCP compatibility libraries, which probably locks the naughty bits of
  OT in memory).
- Install OT 1.2 (when it is released), which fixes the bug

If it were me, I'd go get OT/PPP and install it.

Subject: [A]Netscape & 7.6.1

I want to thank all that wrote with possible solutions. What worked for me
was switching to OT/PPP v 1.0 (Open Transport/PPP). and keeping Netscape 3.0.
I can't tell if my connection is slower or faster than before because I'm
using a slower modem now due to my modem frying the week before.

The consensus was to dump Free/PPP and use OT/PPP, as Free/PPP was causing
all the problems.

One person said he uses Free/PPP (FreePPP v. 2.5.3 or is it (2.5.2 v3)) with
no problems. And that preference files for other PPP problems were causing
the problems. Deleting them should cure the problem. I doubt it in my case
because I did a clean install of 7.6.1 onto a fresh partition of my external
drive.

Another said switch to Netscape 2.0, it is more stable. another said switch
to Netscape 4.0 (the person who recomended 2.0 had problems with 4.0).

Other possible cures are;
*Remove the Quickseek search extension
*Remove anything with a tcp attached to it. include the TCP dnr file though
it will automatically re-appear after you reboot as it is used by some older
programs.

Subject: [Q] Desktop Printer/Printer Menu/Error 15 Messages

My student assistant and I have been trying to install the new printer drivers
and desktop printing software that allows you to put a printer menu at the top
of the screen. We were successful at first, and then all of a sudden, during
a test print run, we started seeing tons of desktop printers spontaneously
generating themselves and then crossing themselves out on the desktop. Any
efforts to try to stop this rapid reproduction were met by messages about an
"Error 15."

When we checked in the read me files we got about this stuff, it mentioned
the possibility of error 15 messages when using Now Startup, but we're not
using that. In fact, we even turned off the standard Extensions Manager,
just in case that was the problem.

A little more detail here...we're running System 7.5.5 on a mixed batch of
5200s and 550s (and right now, our test machine with all the problems is one
of the 5200s). We really don't want the printers on the desktop, so we took
advantage of being able to move them to another folder somewhere else. It
seems like anytime we try to do anything with one of these printers, we get
at the very least, an error 15 message.

If it weren't for the fact that we do have a couple of Color StyleWriters on
the network, I'd just forget about the printer menu and let people switch
printers from the print dialog box (Once we get this problem solved, we're
planning on using FoolProof to disable the Chooser for the students).

We've even tried trashing and reinstalling all the printing software.

Is it just us, or has anyone else had this problem...and hopefully a solution?

Thanks!

Monib, will you consider another option, the online version of the
Merriam-Webster dictionary/thesaurus which can be found at the following
website:

http://www.m-w.com/mw/netdict.htm

There are several advantages to this option: 1) It's free, 2) It doesn't
take any harddisk space, 3) It requires no additional RAM, and 4) It's
readily handy as long as you keep a web browser open while you do your word
processing.

Try MacLink Plus it has a variety of translators and I do believe it will
do the translation for you.

There are several programs out there that can convert a series of PICT
files to a QuickTime movie. The one I currently use is ConvertToMovie
(from Apple, and probably available on one of their sites). You'll have
to dump each frame of your HC movie to a separate PICT file.
ConvertToMovie will do the rest.

Try going to the Easy Open control panel and click the Delete Preferences
button, or if that doesn't work manually delete the prefs and rebuild the
desktop with all *except* Easy Open off. Then redo any prefs that you had
before.

After many months of crash-free bliss using MSIE, I installed Netscape
Communicator 4, just to take a look.

I thought the interface was kinda nifty-looking, but it still insists on
loading the [useless to me] Mail and News parts [I'm happy with Eudora, and
haven't read news in close to a year]. A couple pages I regularly visit
didn't render completely. It felt slower than MSIE. I started to miss my
toolbar shortcuts. Then, a few minutes into my Netscape Experience, my Mac
hung solid. I couldn't even get into the debugger.

I rebooted, trashed NS4, went back to MSIE 3.0.1, and have been crash-free
ever since.
