Subject: [*] AutoLog USA v1.0

AutoLog USA v1.0 is a Filemaker Pro 3 template that will track vehicle expenses
for your business or for your own personal use. It has a simple interface, yet
makes good use of the power of Filemaker Pro's relational database
capabilities.
It will track data on different vehicles and even calculates how much your
car/utility vehicle is costing you per mile.

Subject: [*] Burning of Eden, Marathon 1 scenario

The Burning of Eden is an 18 level scenario for Marathon 1 that has had
many hundreds of hours of youthful enthusiasm devoted to it.

You might be asking what makes it special. It is one of the few really
large scenarios to be formed for the original Marathon (Marathon 1) engine.
The Burning of Eden has everything you might ask for. Whether you like
realism, carnage, or just aesthetics, we have it for you. Included is great
artwork from Matt Schenk, an elaborate plotline, three-way fights, puzzles,
gloomy basements, and more!

We would would appreciate any and all feedback you have. (Tell us about
the bugs you find, what you like, what you do not like, etc.)

(Note: to use this scenario you must have the commercial game Marathon 1
published by Bungie.)

		       Gestalt Selectors List (GSL)
It lists all sorts of information about the Gestalt Manager, but mainly about
selectors and the meaning of the returned values. The Gestalt Manager is part
of
the Apple Macintosh System Software to enable programmers to determine the
availability of certain software and hardware.

Contributions (new info, remarks, etc.) for the list can be send to:

Beside a large number of new and changed selectors, these are the major changes
since the previous version:

- Many new 'mach' machine IDs
- News on the new Apple Logic Board Design LPX-40 and it's machine IDs.
- additional info on the System Update selector 'sysu'.
- ways to identify the hardware and software selling company. ('hrad' and
  'srad')
- a new report on problems with Accelerated 68K Macintosh Computers.
- How to identify the 166 MHz [and up] PowerPC 603e. ('cput')
- A way to determine what type of floppy drive there is ('flpy'), like
  manual-eject!
- Clipboard translation selectors for use with a DOS Compatibility card
  ('xlsf', 'clip' and 'clpx').
- Detecting the new Location Manager software ('trip' and 'walk')
- Why you should NOT use the 'mpeg' selector of the QuickTime MPEG
  Extension.

Subject: (Q) Superpaint problem; recommendation for new drawing

Mark Allen asked for recommendations of a replacement for Superpaint.

I use ClarisDraw, and find it is very good for most purposes. The bitmap
layer is a little basic - no anti-aliasing brushes, and colour selection
limited to 256 colours even when in a 16 or 32 bit graphics mode. But the
drawing layer is excellent in my opinion. It is particularly good for
diagrams and schematics etc, having sophisticated rulers, ability to enter
coordinates from the keyboard etc. Less good for 'arty' freehand work,
although it does have proper bezier curves. Still significantly better than
the drawing package of ClarisWorks.

One of the tools included is "Cache-22" which tests and reports the size of

Dear fellow earthlings,

I have heard about an Apple control panel called "Auto On Off" that starts
and switches off your computer at the time you define. It does the same job
as the "Energy Saver" (I think it's called that in English) but does it
better. Now, I have looked in various Apple sites, both WWW and FTP, but
found nothing. Could it be that you have to install a complete English/US
system to get hold of it? It's not very important, but I would appreciate
if you could tell me where to find it, if you have that knowledge. Many

If there was a web page for that scheme, I'd point to it from a new
section below 'the lost' on my 'sated' page. Avesh's scheme is one of
the poorest I've ever seen, with a number of classic scheme problems:
missing resources (for which we can blame the Eclipse scheme, which is
itself missing a number of icm4 resources), system heap and purgable
bits set incorrectly (for which we can blame Avesh for not
understanding system requirements, and which is likely to be the cause
of your problems - you can fix these yourself with ResEdit),
non-existent support for low colour depths...

However, Avesh's desktop theme is available all over the planet on
info-mac as:

/info-mac/gui/aveshs-desktop-theme.hqx

download and use at your own risk. (what has happened to mac-umich?
They did some QC on submissions.) The abstract of that submission (the
plaintext before the binhex, repeated in the abstracts summary in that
directory) says:

  From: axj133@email.psu.edu (Avesh Jain)

He should get around to posting an update.

> It would seem, you see, that the Avesh scheme causes WordPerfect PPC to
> crash every time without fail.

This doesn't surprise me, although it's unusual to see a
colour-scheme-caused problem be so regularly reproducible.

> The creator really ought to be informed--and the public warned.

I've been talking on the Kaleidoscope scheme designers' mailing list
about the ability of badly-created colour schemes to crash Macs for
a couple of months now - see the archives under:

<URL:http://www.cp.tn.tudelft.nl/kaleidoscope/>

for more on this, as well as discussion of good and bad Kaleidoscope
colour schemes. A number of scheme authors participating there now
have the knack of building solid, safe, attractive, and useful colour
schemes.

Anyway, caveat emptor. In this case, Avesh's scheme is worth slightly
less than what you paid for it.

you install it, it crashes your Mac, you trash it - evolution in action.

I am submitting this on behalf of a colleague who has the following
problem. He runs Blueprint (a cut down version of Minicad) on a PowerMac
7200, system 7.5.3, and a Classic II running system 6. Both function aas
expected, with the plug in architecture working, in particular the nudge
tools.

Problems arise, however, when using a Performa 475, 8 MB RAM and system
7.1.1. For some reason the plugins do not work. Instead of the menu heading
being highlighted to indicate that the plugins are switched on, the menu
just flashes and the plug in refuses to work. GoMark, the dealers,
suggested reformatting the hard disc and re installing the system, which
has been done but to no effect. System 7.5.3 has been installed but still
no plugins. Any ideas?

Subject: Bug in Torquemada 1.3.0?

Torquemada is a text file filterer that can do 20 x 32 search-and-replaces
on 64 text files with ONE drag-and-drop. It's VERY easy to use.

I've used freeware Torquemada 1.1.0 for cleaning up: measurement files (PC)
for use in statistical programs; processing telephone account files; and
for making a database of literature collected from CD's.

Unfortunately 1.1.0 seems to corrupt files larger than 65 535 bytes. The
points in the file that are n x 65 535 bytes from the beginning of the file
gets randomly (?) changed. It does the same mistakes on the same files each
time.

----> Now to my question: Is the commercial 1.3.0 version capable of
correctly processing files larger than 65 535 bytes? Or, has it the same
bug?

The author Greg Swann, a busy man, writes in his homepage that questions
should be put to the proper newsgroup. I have found no such group, perhaps
he's talking about AOL. Any suggestions?

best wishes, bob

I have recently upgraded to Eudora 3 (3.0.2) and I notice that the way it
handles Info-Mac digests is different. I didn't like the old way of
splitting messages into multiple parts when they were bigger than 32K but
now it extracts them as a file.

Question - After I am done reading a digest, I want to delete the alias to
that folder in my "transfer" menu and also delete the file from my

Is there a quick way to automatically do this? It seems to delete one
info-mac archive it now takes 3 steps.

Hello Info-Mac,=20

according to the request in V15 #35 I send you a script I have written
to get my mails and news via Eudora Light and MacSOUP. Lines ending with
"..." are continued on the next line. The cunning thing is the
scriptable shareware-prog "T-Watch 96" which is a Telecom-Counter. It
does the PPP-Open and PPP-Close. AFAIK OT/PPP can do this by
modem-scripting. If used, this script must be verified in file locations
used and sounds played. The script works with MacOS 7.5.3 on a 7200/90.
The only bug is: If the Settings windows of MacSOUP is _not_ open, it
cannot start fetching news.=20

Perhaps this helps.

Kind regards,=20

As I've been running 7.5.5 since early December (96), culled from a UK

There are two solutions that I am aware of:
   (1) Use Acrobat Distiller to convert the .ps file into .pdf format and
print the .pdf file. Distiller is commercial software and is part of the
Acrobat Pro package. This is the method I use with my Personal LaserWriter
L/S (Quickdraw printer). You will also be able to preview the postscript
file using Acrobat Reader.
   (2) The freeware alternative is a program called GhostScript, which can
be downloaded from ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/pub/ghost/aladdin/mac/.
Information about GhostScript can be found at

Yes, there is a good and big reason for Performa 5xxx, 6xxx user. Adobe

At least on the Performas.

I'm quite sure that Marc did not write either of those lines as they
appeared in the digest.

Look folks, it's almost the turn of the century here. I've asked for this
several times before and there has been no motion. Eudora has been able to
properly parse MIME digests for quite a while here, and it would be able to
turn those quoted-printable characters (the "=A9" and "=46") into readable
characters if you would just include 2, or maybe 3, additional lines in
some messages:

1. If the original message had a "Content-Transfer-Encoding" header which
had other than the value "7bit", include it with the message in the digest.

2. If the original message had a "Content-Type" header which was either was
not "text/plain" or had a charset parameter other than "charset=us-ascii",
include it with the message in the digest.

3. If either 1 or 2 above is true, include a "MIME-Version: 1.0" header
with the message in the digest.

There are loads of other things you can do, but just these simple steps
will solve 99% of the problems we see now, and I'm all for going one step
at a time. Now, you have to be somewhat smart about this because some of
the messages you get are multipart messages which include the file
attached, but in that case you take the headers from the text part instead
of the main body of the message.

Please, you've gone so far to make the digest itself in MIME format so that
those of us who can handle MIME can see things in a nice orderly way. Just
take that next step and life will be wonderful.

The "send-PS-to-printer" utility won't work.

What you need is a PostScript interpreter; something that will convert the
PS code in the file you have into a form that the non-PS printer
understands.

Here are some options:

Adobe Distiller will convert PostScript file to PDF, which can then be
printed from Acrobat Reader. This approach has the advantage of retaining
the high resolution of the original document [for the most part]. It has
the disadvantage of costing money. Distiller as a separate product costs
around $200 last I looked*. However, it comes with some other Adobe
products; if you have Illustrator or PageMaker, you may already have it.
<http://www.adobe.com/>

GhostScript will convert from PostScript to a variety of bitmapped graphics
formats, which you could then print from some other program like
GraphicConverter. This approach has the advantage of being free. It has
the disadvantage of requiring the use of a tool [GhostScript] that
apparently many people have problems getting to work [it has always worked
fine for me]. Further, it will probably not retain the high resolution of
the original, unless you have oodles of RAM and a fast machine.
<http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/>

Transverter Pro converts between PS and other graphics formats. I've never
used it, so can't offer much more than that. Disadvantage: costs money.
There's a demo available.
<http://www.techpool.com/tpro.htm>

StyleScript is a PostScript preprocessor for StyleWriters and HP inkjets.
Disadvantage: costs money. There's a demo available.
<http://www.gdt.com/stylescript/>

Image Alchemy will translate PS/EPSF/PDF to 75+ image formats.
Disadvantage: costs money. There's a page at the website that lets you use
it over the web. Cool.

It's hard to tell without looking at a sample output. Have you tried
printing on a different paper type ? One explanation for your problem is
that the paper you are using is too smooth or slippery or something, so
that it is not fed in straight (perhaps the left roller grabs the paper
better than the right). HP would not see it because their test papers
are different and feed in better. Did you include a sample output when

Subject: Two Questions

Couple of questions for y'all.

1. Symantec Tech Support: My "norton.tech" at applelink doesn't work any
more, and I can't finger out how to send a note to those critters via the
Symantec web site, and I'll be consigned to hell before I pay 900-line
costs to call them. Those folk have been helpful in the past. I've done my
poor best to not trouble them unduly. Is there an e-mail address that works?

My current concern relates to Leslye's new Kodak DC50 digital camera. The
accompanying software (necessary to convert Kodak's proprietary pic format
into something standard), did a marvelous number on us. Doing a "save as"
something useful like jpeg got three non-desired results: a system crash,
an invisible non-utile jpeg with the name one tried to save-as, and another
invisible file named "GroundHogDay...etc..." that claimed to be a PICT from
the Kodak software.

The folks who wrote Kodak's software (Pixworks) responded to my query by
saying there was a big problem with Apple's ColorSync 2.1, and we should
trash that extension if it wasn't critical. Only on 68k Macs. Yup, that
worked. My respondent also said she had heard of a GroundHogsDay virus, and
I should maybe ask Symantec (whose SAM 4.5 with Feb 97 defs raised no hoot
or holler) about it.

I tried to ask Symantec. I couldn't do it. Thus my query here.

2. News: I was on one of my rare road trips yesterday and tried my PB5300's
connection to the world last evening. Via AT&T worldnet, I connected quite
well to my home-base mail and to the Virginia Tech mainframe. News failed.
It seems that "news.vt.edu" is available only to folk with a "vt.edu" address.

I tried what passes for "news" from the AT&T Netscape-2 (Gawd! Will they get
up to date in this life) home base and couldn't figure out what I got. Seemed
to be three un-named newsgroups solely related to AT&T. Be still, my heart.

Do y'all have any suggestions for publicly available news servers? I'd prefer
the uncensored stripe. As I said at the University Computer Policy Committee,
we're a university. Censorship is the last thing we should support. It is a
tad unfortunate that the strongest support I got for that statement was from
the Internal Auditor. The comp center director's support was related to the
difficulty of keeping track of what groups were naughty. The student rep and
several faculty were all in favor of active censorship. That was not the only
time I've been embarrassed by my colleagues, but it hurt a lot. I suspect I
couldn't care less about the "alt.naughtyword" newsgroup, but I object to
anyone saying I can't read it.

Yes, I admit to being a (US only, to my knowledge) First Amendment type. I
might despise what you say or show, but I will defend to the death your
right to say/show it.

Well, maybe not to the death.

Maybe that's the problem.
