Subject: [*] Smart Scroll 3.7b1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Smart Scroll package.

Smart Scroll enhances scrollbars for most apps, including Netscape,
Emailer, Eudora, ClarisWorks... (Mac OS 8.5, 8.6, & 9.X) only enhance the
Finder's scrollbars)

Proportional Thumbs: The size of the thumb relative to the scrollbar
shows how much of a document is displayed in a window!

Live Scrolling moves the window contents while you drag the thumb. Power
up your scroll bars!

Scrolling Speed may now be adjusted for all scroll bars and menus! If
your windows are too fast for your taste, this will let you set a
comfortable scrolling speed. The setting is applied whenever you click
in a scrollbar and hold the button down, as well as when dragging in
text fields and across window edges. This feature controls Menu
Scrolling too! Keep the cursor pinned to the edge of the screen above or
below the menu, or bring it in a few pixels to slow down the scrolling
to the rate selected in the Smart Scroll control panel.

This control panel works on any Mac introduced since 1990, running
System 7.0 through Mac OS 9.0.

New in version 3.7b1:

*New: Scrolling Speed control now works for dragging in text fields and
across window edges.
*Smoother scrolling in other situations.
*Misc changes and fixes

Mac OS 8.5 and later provide applications with the possibility of
displaying proportional thumbs, but applications will need to be updated
to take advantage of the new feature. Among applications included with
Mac OS, so far only the Finder and a couple others uses this feature.
Smart Scroll provides proportional thumbs for "the rest of apps" today,
without updating applications applications such as Netscape, Emailer,
AppleWorks, Word or system add-ons such as control panels!

Smart Scroll communicates with Kaleidoscope so scrollbars using the new
color schemes can be proportional and have active scrolling!

Subject: [*] GestLab 1.1b3 - The ultimate Gestalt Manager tool

GestLab is the Gestalt.Appl successor, a tool that allows you to check all
Gestalt selectors posted by Mac OS or by any other piece of software. It is
also a database including information about your system environment. You see
not only some technical infos but also understandable interpretation of most
codes (in English).

There are too many new features in GestLab to be listed here (a mini doc is
included). You have to know that GestLab user interface needs at least
Appearance Manager 1.0.1 (version found in Mac OS 8.1 and next). So, if your
machine has at least Mac OS 8.1, use GestLab. With older systems, continue
to use Gestalt.Appl.

GestLab main goal is to maintain the more exhaustive Gestalt selector
database. When using it, if your configuration is displaying info not yet in
the database (what it is very easy to realize, this info is displayed in
red), don't hesitate to send it to me: I'll analyse it and update the
database for the next release. Your collaboration is essential in this
domain.

Version 1.1b3 features a database separated from application, direct links
to author's Web site to update database and application, modification of
Gestalt values and better theme support.

Subject: [*] SwitchRes 2.3.4J - Japanese version

This is the Japanese version of the SwitchRes package.

SwitchRes is a little utility that will allow you to switch the
resolution of all your monitors. You can access to all the resolutions
of all your displays in a simple, customizable menu. SwitchRes
incorporates features from the Monitor Resolution, Monitor BitDepth, and
Video Mirroring Control Strip Modules bundled with your system. You can
use its menu in the Menu Bar, use its provided Control Strip Module, or
click on the Finder Desktop with its Contextual Menu Plugin.

* You can show and use all available resolutions of your video card,
not just those limited by your monitor. For example, 20 video modes are
available on my PowerMac 7300 internal video board. Enjoy your Apple 15"
monitor in 1024 x 768, or 640 x 480 in 120Hz !
* SwitchRes is totally configurable. You can define which resolutions are
really accessible, and which will require a confirmation.
* You can also create display sets which will allow you to change the
resolution and the depth of all your monitors with just one mouse click,
or just one key. With this new version, you can add scripts to display
sets. That gives SwitchRes the ability to launch a script with just one
key, or when an application is launched...
* You can assign a specific set to an application, so that every time you
use this application, your Mac will automatically switch to your
predefined resolutions. You will find this extremely useful for most games.
* You can save the position of the icons and the windows on your desktop,
independently from one resolution to the other, unlike the Finder. The
configuration is restored at startup.
* You can script SwitchRes for resolutions and color depth changes.
SwitchRes is even recordable: When SwitchRes is running, every
resolution change is automatically recorded in the script editor

Changes in version 2.3.4:

Ń Saves the Application Switcher window with Finder windows
Ń Corrects a bug when the Mac is going out from sleep and goes to sleep
again just after, without waking up completely: this is visible when
attching an USB mouse to Pismo Powerbooks when they are sleeping
Ń Redirecting a resolution in the Control Panel doesnŘt need a confirmation
Ń Changed menu order of resolutions. Resolutions are sorted by screen
surface (h x v) and no more by horizontal size, to match AppleŘs CSM
menu order
Ń ÓActive monitorsÔ is deleted from Control Strip Module menu
Ń Corrects a visual bug in the Control Panel

Traditional word processors work in a linear fashion. Text follows text
which follows text. While this is great for a long research paper or a
novel, it makes the process of writing awkward, as notes and
organizational materials are easily lost or must be kept in separate
documents. Z-Write represents an innovative idea in word processing
technology: it allows you to store multiple documents within a single

convenient, yet you aren't overwhelmed with details. With Z-Write, there
are no limits!

Subject: Appletalk conundrum

Dear Digest readers,
You'll call me a fool for doing this, but I had my reasons. I
trashed the Appletalk control panel after finding that every time I
would turn on Appletalk my computer would restart saying the Finder
had an error trying to boot. This all started with MacOS 9.0.0 on
my Powerbook G3/233 with 512k backside (the Wallstreet). In
anycase, now that I've upgraded to MacOS 9.0.4 I was hoping to try
Appletalk again so I could do peer to peer networking between my 7200
and my Powerbook. Appleshare only wants to work via serial
networking. But nowhere can I find the Appletalk control panel in
my custom installer of MacOS 9 that is part of the MacOS 9 CD. I
don't want to reinstall the whole OS just to get Appletalk back. It
was Appletalk that in the first place under MacOS 9.0.0 forced me to
reinstall the MacOS everytime I turned it on! So if somebody could
send me a working copy of the Appletalk control panel and any
associated extensions that are necessary for it to work in MacOS
9.0.4, please e-mail me first that you are sending it, and how big
the file is, and I will contact you back if somebody else has already
sent it, or if you can go ahead and send it.

Oh by the way, reading the http://www.macintouch.com message board I
learned that the Chooser is not the place in MacOS 9.0.4 to disable
Appletalk, rather the Appletalk control panel is, according to the
help files that are on MacOS 9.0.4. I already knew that starting
with MacOS 8.6, Appletalk shouldn't be turned off from the control
strip either. So it looks like if I want any Appletalk functionality
I will need the most current version of the control panel.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: Audio input plug for G4

I would like to hook up my stereo system to my G4 400 MHz.

The trouble is, there is only the microphone input and I cannot find
an adaptor with the extra-long plug that is used by Apple.

Where do they sell these adaptors?

Also:

Is the audio input plug for the G4 mono or stereo?

Should I connect to my stereo system's headphone socket (large size
plug) or should I connect to the speaker output (clips for wires, not
sockets)?

Will importing sound in this manner yield reasonable quality?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Subject: commands in Finder

Does anyone know how I can get to put a keyboard command in the
Finder menu. I want to use a command for trashing things. I am
running system 9. I know 8Tuner does this with system 8.6 but,
judging by what it is called, I doubt whether it has been updated to
deal with OS9.

Thanks,

Subject: PB G3/500 and slow startup

I have a G3/500 Powerbook but it has been acting very strange lately
with a prolonged pause between loading the extensions and being able
to be used upwards of 20-30 seconds. I am using OS 9.04 but cannot
seem to localise the problem. Has anyone else had this sort of
problem?

Cheers Glen

PS: It doesn't occur with extensions off so I am wondering if there
is an extension that slows loading
