I use a little applescript called "Tell Netscape". It can be found at:

Even though it has Navigator 2.0x in the script, it has worked fine for me
on Navigator 4.0.7 and Communicator 4.5.

Make sure to have both Eudora and Commuicator/Navigator closed when you run
the script. It will open Communicator as part of the script. Then close
Communicator and reboot.

Jonathan:
Try setting Eudora Pro as your mail helper program in Internet Config. This
certainly works in Netscape Navigator. If you're not using all the mail
client stuff in Communicator you may want to try Navigator. It's not
carrying all that extra code so it takes up a fair bit less RAM and HD
space.

You can open any of the OT control panels, choose Configurations... from
the file menu ans export the selected settings to a back-up file that can
be imported if the settings ever get trashed, you want to install the same
settings on another Mac or you need to upgrade or reinstall OT. Store the
saved settings file on a floppy and stick it under your matress in case of
emergency.

I think this comes from having the Launcher open, closing it, reducing the
screen resolution, and then trying to reopen the Launcher. It happens
occaisionally to me if my kids have been playing games at 640x480 when I
usually work at 1024x768.
Try icreasing your resolution and then opening it.

Maybe this helps: I think I have seen the same error message when Launcher
tries to position its window where it does not fit on the screen (e.g when
you have configurede your system when the monitor is in high resolution,
but invoke the Launcher when it is in low resolution). Try switching to
high resolution, and the starting the Launcher.

Subject: [Q] Fixing aliases with OS 8.5...

Hi,

I recently installed OS 8.5 on an 8500, then my lease came up and my new G3
came in with OS 8.5 pre-installed, and of course, I can't really remember
which machine this problem occurred on. When I click on a broken alias, a
dialog box pops up whith no option to fix the alias, only an 'OK' button.
I'm positive at some point in the past the dialog box came up properly with
the 'fix' button, but again, I can't remember if it worked correctly on my
8500 and now doesn't work on the G3, or if it worked at one point on the G3
and then quit working.

Is there some way to turn this option on and off? When I look at help, it
tells me the button should be there but doesn't say anything about
troubleshooting if it's not.

TIA,
    Randall

Here is the summary for my question. I still can't print via the NT spool
(I guess the NT's settings are still wrong or need a few Service Packs
more...) - printing directly to the HP is now OK, though. Thanks for all
who replied. I've condensed the replies together for easy reading. I also
got many replies from the Windows-MacOS cooperation list (List-Digest:
<winmac-digest@xerxes.frit.utexas.edu>):

The NT admin must define the printer queue as postscript; the HP printers
default to PCL I believe. The NT server may also need Services for
Macintosh (SFM) installed on it as well as the latest service pack 4 (SP4)
for bug fixes.

If you look in the properties of a printer on such a server and click on
the Print Processor button, you'll probably see 2 processor's listed,
Winprint and SFMPSPRT (get it? "Services For Macintosh PostScript
PRinTer"). Winprint has a number of Default Datatypes but SFMPSPRT only has
one, PSCRIPT1. I assume that stands for PostScript Level 1. So how do you
spool for Macs but let them use a printer's built-in PostScript processing?
Well, the Print Processor window has a 'Always spool RAW datatype'
checkbox. Maybe if that's checked it'll work.

The printer queues in NT, at least when in RAW mode, don't care whether
it's level 1/2/3 PostScript. That means your Mac can print to a level 1/2/3
PostScript printer through the NT queues. But what about non-PS printers?

There are many printers which don't have native drivers on the Mac. From
the early days, NT has included a PostScript rasterizer (MS bought the
TrueImage PS clone) but basically haven't improved it over the years. It's
stuck as a level 1, non color 300dpi max rasterizer. This rasterizer allows
Macs to print to non-PostScript printers. Before I understood the
limitations, I tried using an Epson Stylus Photo connected to the parallel
port on an NT box . Printing from FreeHand 5.5 through LaserWriter 8.
Results weren't encouraging, for a start it provoked BSOD a few times and
if output came out, it was useless.

Note that NT DOES support Postscript level 2 if you use the Adobe 5.0
driver for NT 4.0. We have found that it is best to use Adobe's postscript
driver for _all_ PostScript printers on both Win95 and NT.

Note also that Quark, Pagemaker, Freehand and other graphics and page
layout apps write their own postscript code so you have to be careful what
options you choose from within the applications (make sure you select the
right PPD from the app itself for example).

Another problem is where you eventually send the postscript code from, that
is, if you print from the mac but go through an NT spool (instead of
directly to the printer through Appletalk), you may encounter strange
things and postscript errors. This happens a lot when printing from Quark
with placed pictures, especially TIFFs. The problem is that a lot of print
servers (HP Jetdirect, etc) make assumptions on the code they receive
depending on the protocol that sent it. They see it coming SMB from an NT
workstation and assume that it is ASCII and was written from a PC and it
doesn't have the CTRL-D, etc (these are just examples, doesn't mean it
happens exactly like that). But the case is it was sent from a Mac and was
written in binary and Quark encodes postscript in a certain way (of course
adhering to Adobe's standards but deviating a little), etc, etc, so the
printer might get confused and spit out errors. Even if you leave the
default for the NT spool to RAW, you may get this behaviour sometimes
because the NT server is not touching the code but it is changing the
protocol that code travels in, it reaches the NT server in Appletalk
packages but then gets put into TCP/IP packages and sent to the printer...
Conclusion: Whenever possible, print directly to a printer using AppleTalk
from a Mac. (Another thing to try is changing the code to ASCII from within
Quark).

Maybe they should also check the security settings on the shared printer. I
believe for Macs to print they have to let the 'Everyone' Group 'Print'
since Macs don't have an authentication method that works with shared
printers (as far as I can tell).

If you really set EtherTalk active, then you should be able to see the
printer in the Chooser and print directly to it without going through the
NT server. You should use HP LaserJet Utility 3.2 for the purpose of
configuring the printer.

[Yes, of course (silly me!). I _had_ set Ethertalk active via Telnet (it is
also possible to configure it via printer's front panel) but I then tried
to print through NT's spool. After this reply I noticed that the LaserJet
appeared in the Chooser _also_ with its AppleTalk-name and now it prints OK
through Ethernet also!]

>What do I need to do to make only one printer name show up in the Chooser?

You could disable AppleTalk at the printer to prevent it from broadcasting
its service to the network, thus eliminating one of the Chooser entries.

However, it may be preferable to have Mac users print directly to the
printers rather than spooling to the NT server's queue, unless logging
printer usage is important or very large print jobs are typical.

Consider creating AppleTalk zones to distinguish where the print services
are coming from. For example, we use an "NT" zone for NT servers and print
queues, a "MAC" zone for AppleTalk print services and Mac file sharing, a
"NOVELL" zone for Netware servers and print queues, etc.

The shared printers established on your NT server can be in the NT zone,
and the AppleTalk print services which are broadcast from the printer's
JetDirect interface can be in the MAC zone. That way from the Chooser the
user can clearly tell whether they are setting up printing to an NT queue
or directly to the printer. Additionally, we also name the NT printers with
"NT" as a prefix at the server. Then there is no question whether a desktop
printer icon at a Mac client is pointing to a printer or to an NT queue.

On the NT server's Network control panel, select the Services tab and get
the properties of Services for Macintosh. From the General tab, set NT (for
example) as the default zone. I'm assuming you have a router or other
device where you will establish the zones. Be sure to list the MAC zone
first (on Cisco routers, anyway) if you want it to be the default zone for
all clients and printers. Otherwise use the HP LaserJet Utility to set
which zone a printer belongs to.

Another option to disable the broadcast of the AppleTalk name is to capture
the port for the printer at the NT server. This is only an option if you
set up the printer's port as an AppleTalk Printing Device. In that case,
highlight the port and click Configure; click the Help button for more
details. However, I've found more utility in just separating the printing
services by zones.

>I wonder what benefit I could have by printing via NT's spool?

The only benefit of printing through a NT print spool is for printers that
do not support EtherTalk or Postscript. For non-Postscript printers, an NT
with SFM installed will convert the Mac print job from Postscript to the
printer's language.

We only capture printers in lab situations. A lab full of only 25 Macs or
so tends to get confused when they ALL try printing to, say, a LJ 4000TN at
the same time. It doesn't do the printer any good either. So we capture the
printer and only allow the NT queue to appear in the Chooser. Works great.

...Conclusion: Avoid NT spooling and print directly to an Ethernetted
printer via EtherTalk.

Dear Macophiles,

Pardon if I play ignorant country bumpkin (since I'm in Japan it should

JAZ/ZIP drives as alternate media. I understand the cost considerations as
well as the reliability considerations (although the unreliability of
ZIP/JAZ does surprise me). What has me baffled is the terms CD-R and
CD-RW. I'm used to seeing CD-ROM written as CD, but is CD-R a read only
CD-ROM? Is CD-RW a read-write CD-ROM? Is there anything such a write only
CD-ROM? Most read and write CD-ROMs I've seen (several months back) seemed
to be pretty expensive. Is there a good webpage which discusses/explains
these terms and different products?

I'm looking for such a storage solution in the near future, does anyone
have recommendations (cost and compatibility are important) for good
machines to buy? I've seen some folks mention La Cie highly, any others
worth looking at?

I have several Mac's I have setup OS 8.5 on that have the disappearing
folder / icon problem described at MacInTouch and other places. It does not
seem to matter if I used HDT 2.5.3 or Apple's Drive Setup 1.6.1. Nor does it
matter if I have done low level / zero all data formatting. It does seem to
occur most with partitioned drives and most frequently on laptops (G3 Series
and 2400c).

Restarting will bring the icons back for a while. And I can use the trick of
keeping an alias in the Apple Menu to access anything on the drive (or

Has there been any solution given or acknowledgement from Apple?

In my little town of Cleveland, Oklahoma, I made a special effort to get
help from the local Southwestern Bell telephone repairmen by visiting their
office and talking with them directly about apparent line noise problems
affecting my modem connections. Although I ultimately had to place my line
check request through the usual channels, the problem was solved quickly by
the repairmen I had spoken to when they came to my house to check the
lines. I have recommended elsewhere finding and talking to any local
telephone company repairman you can find on the street -- if you don't know
where their office is -- to get specific, knowledgeable help. Several
comments coming back to me later have shown that this works not just for me
in my small town but even for modem users in large cities.

I will do so, but nonetheless it is puzzling that MacsBug should cause such
a problem when it's supposed to aid troubleshooting/diagnostics etc. Oh
well. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope I can look forward to a nice stable
system once MacsBug has been removed.

You need to remove MacsBug from your system and only boot with it
installed when you actually need to use it.
I ran 8.5 with the latest MacsBug for a while, and it was crashing to
the point of being infuriating. I removed MacsBug, and now enjoy uptimes
of several weeks on my computer.

For MacsBug to work the way it does, it has to get its fingers into
parts of the system, and sometimes the operating system doesn't like
being poked that way.

Hope this helps. =}

Sad to say but I believe your use of MacMedic was your fatal flaw. I
have seen some reports of this being a dangerous program to use. I don't
recall the specifics or the site (perhaps MRP or MacFixIt) except that
the description of the initial crash and the lack of a fix by way of

have not heard anyone recommending it over Norton or TechTools Pro.

There are no setext "characters" - that's the point of setext. It's an

Subject: Is there a utility like this?

I was reformatting my PowerBook last night due to a dropped, deaded, and
replaced hard drive, and while reinstalling all my software, I watched in
my usual horror at the incompetent sort of way in which seemingly ALL
Macintosh install programs merrily trash all sorts of system extensions -
without making backups - and install versions that were already old when
Moses was a lad in short pants, maybe also dumping in a few files which
used to be extensions but are now part of System.

This really gets on my nerves. No backups, even! That's unforgivable; I
don't know how the installer toolkit vendors have been getting away with
it so long. Is there a utility which does this:

1. Run "collect info" phase after installing System software and nothing
else. Program makes backup copies of everything in Extensions and Control
Panels.

2. Run "checkup" phase after installing application software. Identify
which extensions have been replaced with old versions and restore these
from backups. Delete or move extensions which are irrelevant to current
System versions. Everything unknown that's been added, log somewhere so
the user can check out what each extension does at a later date if
necessary.

If there isn't such a utility, I may have to write one as I've positively
traced some nasty and strange behaviors to the fact that something I
installed - probably one of Adobe PageMaker 6.5, Photoshop 4.0, or
PageMill 2.0 - replaced my 8.1 AppleScriptLib with 7.5's.

I realize there are some resources out there on the net which will help
to identify, for example, which extensions have been rolled into System,
but (a) I don't want to do everything manually, (b) they don't help to
identify when versions have changed, and (c) if a system extension does
get nuked with an older version, quite often the file you need is lurking
inside an archive file on the MacOS CD and not easily accessible.

There are two kinds of 56k modems around: 56k "x2" and 56k "Flex." If you
and your ISP aren't using the same kind, they won't connect above a nominal
28.8kbps.

The people in Geneva, Switzerland, who are supposed to control the world's
modem protocols and standards for the rest of us have adopted a protocol
called v.90 that theoretically combines the best of 56kx2 and 56kFlex
modems so they can communicate with one another at maximum speed.
Unfortunately, that seems not to work as advertised all the time, so I
recommend matching your and your ISP's modems as closely as possible until
all the old before-v90 x2 and Flex modems are out of the Internet Service
Provider network.

And then, if you're using OT/PPP, get the correct modem script to go into
your System Extensions Modem Script folder and then to be selected in your
Modem control panel (Setup: Modem). "US Robotics Universal," which ships
with OS 8.1, won't work correctly with the new U.S. Robotics 56k modems --
if you buy a U.S. Robotics 56k modem, get back to me and I'll send you the
right script, "U.S. Robotics High Speed."

If you can use only one ISP, get the same kind of 56k modem the ISP is
using (x2 or Flex), including same manufacturer if possible. In my
experience, USRobotics modems are best if you can find an ISP using
USRobotics (3Com) 56k x2 v90 modems, which are now widely used. All
computer stores and discount houses carry USR modems. I have two U.S.
Robotics 56k External Faxmodems with x2 and v.90 and swear by them. Other
modems I have owned I have sworn at them.

Dear Fellow Macophiles,

There was a discussion involving several persons back in numbers 200-203
(I've been gone for a few weeks and am just catching up). One question
addressed problems encountered with Fetch. Several users answered that
CrashGuard does not act reliably. The reply from Maurice Mike McNeil below
also mentions the extension "ObjectSupportLib" and problems encountered
with it. My curiousity was peaked, and lo and behold, I found this
extension in my System folder. How to determine what this extension is all
about? A few months back I downloaded InformINIT 8.1 (shareware program
recommended by a user in InfoMac) but hadn't checked it out yet--this gave
me a good reason. InformINIT did its job, telling me that ObjectSupportLib
is no longer required, the updated version is included in the OS8 System
file. I've disabled that sucker.

I just wanted to pass on to all that InfoMac is a wonderful information
resource, in so many little ways. Thanks Maurice!

We have universally turned OFF Norton CrashGuard for similar behaviors. The
only other problem that is more subtle is if you have a copy of
"ObjectSupportLib" in your extensions folder. That causes all sorts of
strange problems. Do a Find File and remove ALL copies.

However, I'm reluctant to find any of my favorite applications suddenly

Subject: Questions on inherited computers

Hi Folks,

I recently came into a couple of "inherited" computers. Now that I have 4
Macs, all in excellent condition, I need to know which to keep, if any,
and which to sell.

I'm currently using a 7100/80 AV which I plan to sell. The "new"
computers are as follows:

Apple 7350/180 server, 80 meg RAM, 4G HD. (I have one of these)
Motorola Starmax 3000/180, 32 RAM, 1.2G HD. (I have two of these)

Now, for the questions. I've pretty much decided to sell the Starmaxes.
They appear to be in stock condition, except, both were connected to a
large network and have some sort of network cards installed (marked RJ45,
and with small LEDs marked 10 and 100). How can I ascertain the market
value of these computers? What is the network card, and how does it
affect the value of the computers?

Now, about the server, I have several questions.

1) What is the difference between a server and a non-server Mac (i.e.
7300 vs. 7350)?

2) Is the server good to use as a main machine, or would I be better off
selling the server and buying a regular Mac?

3) How can I ascertain the value of this computer?

4) Is this model's CPU upgradable (ie. to G3)?

5) The system did not come with a CD but is currently running 7.6.1. Can
I install the standard Mac OS 8.5, or do I need special system software
to run a server?

6) How can I find out the speed of the internal CD drive?

Finally, if I do decide to keep the server, I'd like to transfer some
files from my 7100 to the server's HD. How do I connect these two Macs so
that they can transfer files.

You may reply to the list or directly to my e-mail. Thank you in advance
for any light you may be able to shed on this subject.

the bottom of the screen to make them pop-up folders. Set the view on
these folders to 'as Buttons'. It works identically to the launcher,
except the windows stay tucked away at the bottom of the screen so they
take up much, much less real estate than the launcher does. They also
remain up after restarts, etc.
