The final figure Gris would create was Woman with a Basket, which was in fact his last painting. Gris described these late personage as having a Pompeian and Ecole de Fontainebleau air in their classicism. An oval window (or mirror) is now blackened, as Gris presents a somber climax to his most profoundly felt theme. Is this the artist's muse bringing him his still-life subject to paint, or an angel of death, or perhaps the final translation of his musician stationed before a window?
