Questions For a Service Provider

Some questions to consider when you contact a service provider:

  1. What connection services do they offer? Ask them to describe the service in detail (that is, until you understand what they are talking about).
  2. What is the cost?
  3. What is included in the cost?
    - the circuit cost (installation and monthly charge)
    - the router (cost of on-site router, cost of off-site router)
    - the type of hardware/software
    - any maintenance (if so, what's included)
    - a membership fee
  4. Is there any other kind of charge not included in the initial cost?
  5. What support services do they offer (NIC, NOC)? Ask them to explain what they mean by either organization.
  6. Do they fix the router when it's broken?
  7. Do they require 24-hour access to the physical location?
  8. Do they require that an on-site person be available to assist them?
  9. What training is available? Is it included in the above cost?
  10. Do they have an acceptable use policy?
  11. Do they hold an annual meeting?
  12. Do they have a full time, professional staff?
  13. Are there limitations to connecting to other parts of the Internet (that is, can you get everywhere you need to get)?
  14. Can they provide references of other clients?
