Gathered for UNCTAD IX, in Midrand, South Africa, the Ministers of developing countries (132 member States) and China held the Eighth Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 and adopted, on 28 April 1996, a Declaration calling on all Governments to spare no efforts to seize the " exceptional opportunity" provided by the Conference "of forging a real global partnership aimed at ensuring international peace and development".
The Ministers of the least developed countries, participating in the
ninth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, held in Midrand, South Africa, adopted a Declaration in which, inter alia, they reaffirmed their commitment to the cause of sustained growth and sustainable development in an increasingly globalizing and liberalizing world economy. "UNCTAD IX, taking place in the wake of major global conferences, must find new and imaginative ways to respond to the
challenges facing the developing countries".
