Tourism in Zimbabwe

Tourism is one of Zimbabwe's major economic sectors and continues to experience a phenomenal growth in tourist arrivals, tourist receipts and tourism-related investment. Visitor arrivals increased from 268 418 in 1980 to 879 501 in 1993, an annual average growth rate of about 10 percent. Tourist receipts increased from just over Z$24 million in 1980 to around Z$669 million in 1993, an annual average increase of 34 percent. The tourism industry continues to attract investment, as evidenced by the renovations, expansions and construction of new hotels around the country.

Tourism in Zimbabwe is based on its abundant, but very fragile, natural resources and a rich cultural and historical heritage. The industry is very conscious of this and environment conservation plays a pivotal role in the sustainable development of tourism in Zimbabwe.

Among Zimbabwe's attractions are specially-protected areas comprising the National Parks and wildlife estates which make up approximately 13 percent of the country's surface area. Wildlife tourism is the mainstay of this sector of the economy but, in addition, the majestic Victoria Falls, the Great Zimbabwe national monument and the beautiful and varied scenery of the Eastern Highlands and the Matopos make Zimbabwe one of the most spectacular tourism destinations in Africa. The mighty Zambezi river, Lake Kariba and numerous smaller dams offer a diversity of water-based sports ranging from white water rafting on the Zambezi rapids and cruising to canoeing and game fishing.

Tour operators and travel agents are available in all major tourist centres. Air Zimbabwe provides daily flights linking the major tourist areas to the cities. Car hire is easily available, with some of the most well-known international names in vehicle rental also being at home in Zimbabwe.

Accommodation caters for all tastes and pockets, and ranges from simple camping sites to luxurious five star hotels.

Deserving special mention are the numerous opportunities for golf. Zimbabwe has over 70 courses of international standard and most hotels offer visitors golf in addition to other sporting and recreational activities. For those interested in golf there are operators specialising in golf tours.
