One of Zimbabwe's newest recreational areas, this Recreational Park lies 62 miles west of Harare near the main Harare-Bulawayo road. It is centred on the 20 000 acre Darwendale Dam on the Manyame River which supplements Harare's water supply. High ground within the conserved area around the lake forms part of the Great Dyke and supports Brachystegia woodlands with surrounding open grasslands.

A few large mammals, notably kudu, are indigenous to the area and others may be reintroduced in future. The shallow dam basin also creates an ideal habitat for waterbirds. The park has not yet been developed for visitors but will ultimately relieve much of the pressure on the popular McIlwaine Recreational Park. Facilities for boating and angling will be provided and a commercial fishery is being developed.

The lake and surrounding area were declared a Recreational Park under the Parks and Wild Life Act (1975).
