ortuguese direct investment abroad decreased in 1993 as a result of the unfavourable international situation.

Until 1990, outward investment mainly flowed to the United Kingdom, Spain, USA and France. From 1991, however, Spain became by far the primary target for Portuguese investment, representing a very significant share of the total in 1993.

Since Portuguese direct investment abroad is considered an important strategic aim, the Government launched an incentive programme to support the internationalization of Portuguese companies (PAIEP). This programme, managed by ICEP, helps to define individual company polices for investment outside Portugal.
