Pulses enjoy a 10 percent duty, do not require an import license, and unlike many agricultural products, do not fall under the ban on imports of consumer products of agricultural origin. The greatest impediment to future growth is expected to be price, as Canada and Hungary are also competitive suppliers. Green peas have thus far been the leading U.S. export in this sector. Almonds are subject to a tariff of rs. 55/kg for in-shell and rs. 80/kg for shelled. Pistachios also have some potential, although there is a great deal of competition from Iran, and imports are subject to a 65 percent duty. India's exports are primarily of cashews, walnuts and betel nuts. Brief Comments: As India's food processing industry becomes more sophisticated, demand for some intermediate inputs, which can not be produced locally, is expected to grow. This would include items such as malt extracts, cheese powders, flavorings, yeasts, mixes and concentrates. While India is already a producer and exporter of some of these items, foreign firms investing in India are likely to require higher input standards for their more complex production methods.
