II. LEADING TRADE PROSPECTS FOR U.S. BUSINESS: Future exports of agricultural commodities will be limited by India's complex web of import restrictions and generally sufficient domestic production of many agricultural commodities. India currently bans imports of virtually all consumer products of agricultural origin, while bulk commodity imports, with the exception of corn and pulses, are subject to government controls. Other imports are subject to licensing requirements or are channeled through government- run monopoly importing agencies. Leading commercial imports in the absence of poor weather conditions are expected to be pulses and tree nuts. There is also some scope for increased trade in the food processing sector. This sector is relatively new in India and government and industry are encouraging its development. Intermediate inputs to more sophisticated food processing, such as flavorings, extracts, preparations and concentrates are not readily available in India and demand may grow as the industry develops.
