Subject: [!] Removal of Folder Security - Applescript

The file recently added has been removed from the archive, due to the
reasons explained in the author's note:

[with this post, we give a warm info-mac welcome to Matt Bauer, our newest
info-mac moderator. Matt will be helping to relieve the archiving backlog we
are all enjoying. Thanks, Matt for all your help!

On an equally joyous note, U.S.West has FINALLY installed my ISDN line and
I am able to take on a bit of that backlog myself.--Mike O'Bryan]

Dear Archivist,

The applescript "Folder Security" was just recently uploaded to you. If
you are going to place it in your archives, please do not. If it has been
placed, please remove it. I have two reasons for this request:

1.) An equivalent applescript already exists in your archives which I was
not initially aware of.

2.) I have recently discovered that some of the code used to write the
included OSAX is copyrighted by another party and I have not received
permission to include it with my own file.

For these reasons, please disregard the upload of Folder Security.

Thank you for your time and I apologize for the mistake,

Nathaniel Mitkowski

Subject: [*] Classical Guitar Sampler

A few days ago I had the need for some classical music to add to a video
project I'm working on. In the spirit of do-it-yourself, I picked up my
classical guitar and created an audio cassette of several public domain
classical melodies that I could use for whatever video or multimedia
projects I happen to be working on.

In the spirit of sharing, I'm making these melodies available for anyone
else to use in their video or multimedia projects. This SimpleCard stack
is a sampler of the melodies on the audio cassette titled, "Classical
Guitar Melodies 1."

I'm making this freeware cassette available for $6 (including postage
within the United States) to anyone who might have an interest in it.
(Canada, $8. Airmail overseas, $10.) If you'd like these melodies in
digital format on an Iomega Zip disk (AIFF format), kindly send a Mac
formatted Zip disk along with the above requested fee.

Cheers,

Phil Shapiro

Subject: [*] Computer Cuisine 4.0

Keywords: COOK RECIPE SHOPPING FOOD TEMPLATE FILEMAKER LIST SORT FIND

Version 4.0 includes:
 Over 1,000 pre-entered recipes!
 Enhanced Graphical Layout
Expanded Conversion Menu for Easy Calculations!
 Expanded Recipe Listing!
 Expanded Sorting Functions!
...one more time, over 1,000 recipes included!!!
 ....and more!

The high quality graphics contained in this software package are simply better
than any other recipe program available for the Macintosh. And with over 1,000
recipes included in the Computer Cuisine database, you already have an amazing
amount of recipes at your fingertips!

Have you ever wanted to find a particular recipe, but didn't want to sift
through
pages and pages from your favorite cookbook? Have you ever wanted to
search all
your recipes for a certain ingredient? Have you ever wanted to give a
particular
recipe to a friend, without having to go through the hassle of jotting down the
thing word for word? Now you can. And Computer Cuisine is the tool that will
make it happen.

Computer Cuisine is a Macintosh file for use with FileMaker Pro, by Claris
Corporation. This template will allow you to conveniently view, print, sort,
file, organize and save your cooking recipes. It's features include a well
designed layout that makes adding, viewing, sorting, finding and printing a
snap.
In addition to the simple layout, Computer Cuisine allows you to add an
infinite
number of your own recipes to the existing ones. This will allow your recipe
database to grow and grow!

Icons are added to the top of the layout for added convenience. For
example, you
can sort all of your recipes with one click of your mouse. Computer
Cuisine will
then alphabetically sort your recipes alphabetically by the recipe's name.
This
creates an "index-like" listing much like you may find in the back of any
normal
cookbook you may own. And with the extensive search capabilities already built
into the program, you will now be able to search through all of the entered
recipes with the touch of a button! You don't even have to know the exact
name of
the recipe, or ingredient.

Please browse Computer Cuisine, and the manual, and see for yourself!

Subject: [*] Holiday Lights for Macintosh 3.0.4

Give your Macintosh a festive look with Holiday Lights, an
entertaining application that places flashing light bulbs around the edge
of your screen, as though a (well-insulated) elf crawled into your computer
through the disk drive slot and stapled them there.

The lights flash in the background while you continue to work; it's not
just a screen-saver! The "bulbs" include standard Christmas tree lights,
Valentine's Day hearts, Thanksgiving turkeys, chili peppers, stockings,
holly, snowmen, happy faces, and more - and you can create your own bulbs
using ResEdit or a similar program. Is it useful? Well... okay, no. Is it
wonderful fun? Absolutely!

For even more seasonal joy, Holiday Lights includes cheery background music
and a built-in festive screen saver to put you in the holiday spirit. It's
a multimedia extravaganza!

Holiday Lights is an application, not an extension, so it won't cause
extension conflicts. Version 3.0.4 fixes a problem that caused a small
number of bulb patterns not to be remembered when the program was quit and
relaunched. $15.00 shareware; may be included on the CD.

Subject: [*] Hornet STRIKE! Missions 2.0

Hornet STRIKE! Missions version 2.0 by Front and D. Allen Smith
Copyright 1996 Front, D. Allen Smith, and STRIKE! Software.

Hornet STRIKE! Missions 2.0 is a full 40 mission set for the Macintosh
F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 or 2.0.1 flight simulator*. The STRIKE! Missions include
28 new Kuwaiti theater missions, 6 new Arizona theater training missions
and 6 new Hawaiian theater training missions. In addition, your allies are
more aggressive and you will encounter new and more devious foes.

Required: F/A-18 Hornet 2.0/2.0.1 and a Mac to run it on (68030 or
better).

Are you familiar with the wingman in Hornet that circles his base, ignoring
the enemy while you get shot down? And when he does get involved, he only
pokes one Sidewinder at the Flankers? The wingman who says "Good shot" to
you when you shoot down an enemy fighter 40 nautical miles away from him?
WELL, HE JUST GOT SHIPPED OUT!

Introducing your NEW wingman, who ingresses with you straight into the
heart of Iraq, laughs in the jaws of death, spits in the face of danger,
takes four AMRAAM's and two Sidewinders with him on every mission, fires
Mavericks at air defenses, flies low, flies high, flies fast, flies slow,
uses afterburner, makes multiple bombing passes on targets, uses
Durandals, stays on your wing, and calls "Fox Four!" when you need it.

He's called Hornet Two, and he's just brought the rest of his squadron
into the fray...

In just some of the new STRIKE! Kuwait missions, you will:

Protect three B-52 bombers at high altitude in "Buff Protection," help
three A-10 Warthogs destroy the runways of an enemy air base with multiple
Durandal attacks in "Hog Handiwork," search for two SU-27 Flankers
somewhere in Iraq in "Flanker Fixit," lead a flight of seven Hornets off
the Carrier against a massive pumping station near Basrah in "Listen to
Reason," overfly the fleeing Iraqi tanks in "Basrah Escape," and inspired
by recent events in September, 1996 fly "Illuminating Rita" in
support of Air Force F-16's in the "No-Fly" zone.

The new training missions make you WORK for your qualifications. Land a
damaged Hornet on a carrier at night in "Carrier Night Quals," practice
advanced high-speed/low-level bombing runs with Hornets Two and Three on
Kahoolawe in "Low Leveler," and defend the honor of your Air Wing, with
Hornet Two, against two Air Force F-16's following strict rules of
engagement.

Subject: [*] NetStripper v4.0

NetStripper v4.0 is the latest version of the NetStripper text converter
utility. Over 300 to 400% faster than any previous version, the new version
supports all the translation modes of the earlier versions. In addition, it
has enhanced AppleScript support, the ability to receive drops of folders
as well as files, a menu command to select a folder for conversion, and
also a new preference - the notification sound - that allows the user to
record a sound that can be played when all translations have finished.

NetStripper v4.0 supports the DOS/Unix to Mac, Mac to DOS, Mac to Unix and
CR Strip modes. As usual the carriage return strip can either remove single
carriage returns while converting double carriage returns to singles, or
can remove single carriage returns while leaving double carriage returns in
place.

NetStripper v4.0 is a FAT binary, which means it runs at optimal speeds on
all MacOS computers, from Apple's Macintosh SE to the latest Power
Computing and similar clones. It has been tested with System software from
System 7.0 to 7.5.5 and works without problems on all versions, although
for versions earlier than System 7.5 you will need to install Apple's
Thread Manager extension (included in the package).

NetStripper v4.0 is shareware, priced at US$10 or =A35 (5 UK pounds).
Payments are handled by Kagi Shareware (http://www.kagi.com).

Subject: [*] Sprite Fight 2002

Sprite Fight 2002 is a high speed action arcade game for the Macintosh/Power
Macintosh/Compatible computers. If you have ever looked with jealousy to those
with Nintendo and Sega machines with their excellent combat-style games, then
this is the game for you! Sprite Fight 2002 is the closest thing to a Mortal
Kombat or Street Fighter for the Macintosh that you will find. All game
characters are digitally photographed actors at 128x128 pixels! Graphics are
full-screen! And unlike other popular games which hide their graphics and
sounds
by compiling or compressing them, Sprite Fight 2002 makes it easy for anybody
with a Mac drawing program and a copy of Apple's ResEdit to make their own game
characters, as the character files are comprised of totally editable sound and
graphic resources! New to Sprite Fight 2002 is the availability of several
fatalities and secret codes for extra features such as background animation,
foreground animation, and special character abilities! It was programmed using
extremely high speed sprite animation techniques (specifically, the SpriteWorld
1.0b4 Library by Tony Myles). It is accelerated to take advantage of Power
Macintosh computers with the PowerPC processor, has multi-channel sound,
built-in QuickTime video[1], as well as computer-synthesized speech[2]!

[1] You will need QuickTime installed for this feature to work
[2] You will need Speech Manager installed for this feature to work

What is Included in this bundle
In addition to the Sprite Fight 2002 application, some other files are
included:
- 6 Sprite Character files!
- 7 Combat Zone files!
- Special Tools for Creating Your Own Sprites!
- The Instruction Manual

System Requirements
- Mac II or better, Accelerated for Power Macintosh
- 13" Monitor or larger (640x480 pixel display or bigger) w/ 256 colors
- System 7.0 or higher
- Sound Manager 3.0 or higher
- 6 MB free RAM to devote to game, virtual memory NOT recommended if you are
low
on RAM-this means your Mac needs to have AT LEAST 8 MB of RAM installed
(SIMMs or
DIMMs)
- Approximately 14 MB free disk space for all game files

Recommended System
- Faster Mac = Better
- 10+ MB RAM installed (not including virtual memory)
- QuickTime 2.0 or later
- Speech Manager

Subject: [*] Stomp Box Delay

Stomp Box Delay is a real time delay effect for use with musical
instruments.
You can use it to add echo and reverb-like effects to your instruments for
recordings or during a performance. You can even use it with your
favorite MIDI
sequencer.

The basic functionality of a delay is to record a sound and play it back
a short
time later. If the time is very short (like 50 milliseconds), it can sound
similar to a slap-back reverb (kind of like talking into a fan). If it's
longer
(like 1/2 a second) it can produce a rhythmic effect that changes the
whole feel
of whatever your playing.

Requirements:
* System 7
* Sound Manager 3.1
* Full duplex sound hardware (the ability to record and playback at the
same
  time).
* Microphone or musical instrument

I give permission for my program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Touch-3D v2.0 demo

Touch-3D is a general purpose 3D modelling and unfolding program for MacOS.
It can be used for 3D modelling, concept design, quick prototyping,
mock-ups, scale models, architectural scale models, production preparation,
and as a general purpose unfolding program.

Touch-3D can be used for creating scale models. Draw the model in Touch-3D,
or in an external program. Unfold the model and print it on any standard 2D
printer or plotter. Cut out the pieces and fold the model into a physical
3D model!

Unfolding.
The unfolding function provides a unique ability to interact between the 3D
model and the unfolded pattern. Changes made in the 3D model can instantly
be seen in the Unfold view. Touch-3D also provides an absolute control over
the order in which models are being unfolded. This is very important
because even a cube can be unfolded in many different ways.

Modelling.
The 3D modelling tools provide powerful free form sculpting abilities. Any
number of vertex point can be moved in any direction, at any time. Four
different modelling modes provides instant access to individual vertexes,
mesh points, polygons as elements, and entire groups. Models can also be
deformed by means of alignment rulers, in 2D or 3D. Any number of vertexes
can be associated to a ruler at any time. Any number of rulers can be used
for deforming a model individually in more than one direction.

A knife tool is used for increasing the number of polygons in a model. Any
number of polygons can be cut at any time, and from any view, including the
Unfold view. You can start modelling at a fairly rough level and gradually
increase the number of polygons to smooth the model, pretty much in the way
a sculptor work.

Touch-3D on the WEB.
Take a look at the Touch-3D WEB page at:

http://www.algonet.se/~ludesign

You will find several practical examples of use for Touch-3D. It also
contains the latest version of the DEMO, where to buy Touch-3D, and other
useful information.

Greetings and Salutations:

> >But since last week, my Mac IIci seems to want get to life: about three
> >seconds after I shutdown it, it turns on again! The only way to keep it

I am glad that I have (finally) heard of someone with the same problem.
About 1 or 2 years ago I came home to find my Mac IIci on. I was sure
that I had powered it down after I last used it but I didn't remember, so
I powered it back down. Later found it powered up again and (once again)
powered it down (thinking I must have forgotten again). Next I was
sleeping in the middle of the night and heard a familiar "Bong". It was
alive :-) ... More and more often it just started up on its own, and the
only way to keep it off was to turn the power off.

> >turned off is pulling off the powercord from the power supply.

I have one of those "console power" bars with the power in the front (and
*of course*) a surge protector. I just turn off the switch on the front.

> >Should it be a problem with the power key of my keyboard? Or will I have
to

> The IIci has a power-on button on the back of the case. It is round, and

> turned (so that is locks in), assuring that the machine will try to come to
> life as long as there is power coming in the plug. This was terribly handy
> for server machines.

I checked that and it was out, no power from that. I even started
troubleshooting by unplugging the mouse, then the keyboard, and finally
with nothing on the ADB chain it was *still* starting itself up.

My latest problem is that the MoDem (serial) port died on me. I
replaced the battery hoping (very little hope I might add) that
changing the battery might help the port problem and the automatic
startup problem. No such luck. I am now using the printer port for
my MoDem.

Subject: [Q] Problem with Mac VisualFoxPro-ODBC-Oracle Memo and General Fields

Background:
I'm working on an application which needs to talk from a Visual FoxPro DBMS
for Macintosh (PowerMac) to an Oracle 7 database using ODBC (Open DataBase
Connectivity).
I'm using a PowerPC 8500 Mac, System 7.5.5, OpenTransport 1.1.1; Visual
FoxPro (VFP) 3.0 for Mac; ODBC PPC Mac driver from Visigenic; Oracle
7.2.3.0.0 (with corresponding SQL*NET).

Problem:
In FoxPro you can have fields of type "Memo" and "General" which map to
Oracle RDBMS field types "long" and "long raw" respectively. The ODBC
interface seems to work OK for smaller sets of data. However, when I save
large ( > 40Kbytes) sets of information from FoxPro into the fields in
Oracle via ODBC, I get no error on the save, but when I try to read the
information back in via ODBC and look at it, I get errors.
For Memo fields, I don't get all the data back. For the General fields, I
save the data as an OLE link, and when I try to get it back and try to look
at the data, I get an "OLE error code 0x8000401C2: Contents of the OLESTREAM
not in correct format".

I contacted MicroSoft about the OLE error, and their FoxPro people say it
works OK with MicroSoft's SQL Server, so it must be the ODBC driver. I
contacted Visigenic and they say their driver tests OK, so it must be the
FoxPro package. Sigh.

Question(s): Has anyone run across this problem before? Any suggestions on
solutions? What is fixed is the use of Visual FoxPro and Oracle 7, the
method of client-server connection is open.

Thanks in advance.

I sometimes use Win95 at work and I must admit to liking one aspect of the

out of the way but somehow it doesn't seem so elegant when the title bar

Alas the implementation was clunky at best. Am I the only one that likes

anyone know of a utility that provides this little interface gem?

Subject: Support/Replacement for Souvenir

Some years back I was a beta tester and user for a product called Souvenir
(Version 2.2). This is a light-weight address book program that was fairly
simple and VERY fast. The wonderful feature of the product was that you
could hit the CMD key twice and pop up the search dialog. It would even pop
if you had another dialog box open... Really nice.

Well, this product continues to work fine under System 7.5.5 with one
exception, it breaks when Open Transport is installed. It works fine if the
networking is set to MacTCP, but when you select Open Transport, about five
minutes after restarting, the system crashes or hangs. I can only figure
out that Souvenir is checking for it's serial number on the network or
something of the kind and that fails.

Anyway, my question is this: Does anyone know the whereabouts of the folks
that wrote this package? Is an update available anywhere? What about a
replacement?

I have tried In Touch and other contact databases and find that they just
aren't as convenient. I don't need all the fancy report writers and output
stuff, just a simple, small, fast, available database.

topic: what to do with a Mac Plus. I thought it was well written and very
interesting. They have a web site, too, might be something there as well.

Subject: What's a Plus good for?

Paul,

You'll need a Plus with 4 MB to do much useful with a Plus. For just
plain word processing I recommend WriteNow, which has a small memory
footprint and is responsive on the Plus's 68000 8MHz processor.

See the February 97 issue of MacAddict for more on what a Plus is good
for. It runs System 7.5.5 fine, so I here. I'm still running 7.0.1 on
mine. It's the last system release I know of to come on 800K floppies.
