Dear Digest readers,
Our favorite mail order companies have barely touched the tip iceberg
of what is available in Mac games. I just found the most amazing
page of hybrid Windows/Mac games.

http://www.cduniverse.com/asp/g_pcs.asp?cart=87209574&style=gameafl&c=HYBRID

Hundreds of them!

Did somebody say the Mac collection of games is limited?

Sincerely,

Subject: (A) MacOS 9 & Appletalk

Dear Digest readers,
Time and time again I seemed to have to reinstall the MacOS 9, after
opening the Appletalk control panel when the computer is not
connected. Well I found out that the following files get corrupted
in the System Folder when this happens:
Extensions -
    AppleShare
    File Sharing Extension
    File Sharing Library
Preferences
    Users & Groups CP prefs
    Users & Groups Data File
    AppleShare Prep
    AppleTalk Preferences

    File Sharing (folder)
    File Sharing CP prefs

Trashing these files when extensions are disabled (hold down the
shift key during startup), and letting the Finder create new copies
seems to resolve the issue temporarily. If I don't trash them, each
new reboot with extensions on yields an Address error before any
extensions load.
If I need to get Appletalk installed again, though I have to clean
system install the whole system.

This is especially a problem with Powerbooks. So turn off your
Appletalk and down the computer before detaching any network cables.
Having an ethernet internet connection only worsens the problem.

Powerbook G3/233 512k backside cache (14.1" screen) 192MB of RAM.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

a:
This is because when we wake up new years day and fire up the Mac (or throw
another log on if it's already running) and the date reads 01/01/00 then WE
KNOW and the Mac, too, KNOWS that it's 2000 A.D. If you change the date
format to show the century, then it will display 20 not 19. Most of us know
what century we live in and don't choose to have that displayed. That's why
the default is to have it show two digits.

Subject: [*] ACRONYMS (v1.0.1) - A Casual Round-up Of Novelties in YourMessage System

(words and phrases in capitals are acronyms whose expansions are in the stack)

The purpose of this FREEWARE HYPERCARD STACK is to provide an introduction
to a MIRTHFUL use of ACRONYMS on the INTERNET. Have you ever wished you had
a better alternative to LOL? Or thought "Who makes up these WITTICISMs?"
Well anybody can, you can! Don't say you're JUST TOO BUSY! and you don't
want to READ A MANUAL. You can create an ACRONYM out of ALMOST ANYTHING!
You can make them from any old CLICHE, use them to tell people to SHUT UP,
state that THAT'S NOT FUNNY, tell a GIRL that she's FEMININE, SMILE a SMUG
SMILE or just find FLAWS in the MEMORY of a UNIVERSITY EINSTEIN.

Take a DIRTY MIND, add a CHUCKLE, stir in a QUIP, and a QUANTITY of
SNORTING, stick on a DISCLAIMER, and that's THE WAY THINGS ARE!

You can politely tell people to PISS OFF, PUT A SOCK IN IT, BE CIVIL or
tell them THAT'S CHILDISH. You can tell people that they're talking
BOLLOCKS! And if you're ON A ROLL, you can create a HUMDINGER of a reply to
someone who won't TRY ONSCREEN HELP.

So who began this BIZARRE ADVENTURE through the ALPHABET? A CRAZED KIWI and
an ABNORMAL IRISH man with a DIRTY MIND, who found themselves making up
LAUGHTER ACRONYMS during their EPISTLES to the ANTIPODES - a sequence of
combinations started when TONY MCCOY O'GRADY (MAXIOGEE) sent ANGELA BRETT
AN EMAIL about his SLEUTHing in some of her SHAREWARE. They decided not to
continue DOING NOTHING about their HILARIOUS ACRONYM stash, so they
compiled them into this STACK, and in the process created a SUPERHERO
called MACGIRL, her SIDEKICK KEYBOARD, and many DASTARDly VILLAINs.

Both these WEIRD ACRONYM WRITERS like APPLE and think that MACINTOSH IS THE
BEST! ANGELA has two POWERBOOKs and the DIRTY OLD IRISHMAN has a BONDI BLUE
iMAC, a broken NEWTON and a few other MACINTOSHes. We haven't yet collected
EVERY ACRONYM UNDER THE SUN, but we'd like to try... think some up yourself
and send them to angela@kagi.com for inclusion in the next update list for
this stack. (You can download the latest update lists from the acronyms
site on the WORLD WIDE WEB at http://un.co.nz/angela/acronyms and import
them into the stack.)

Just in time for the holidays, John Mauro Software is proud to announce
the release of Digital Wipeout 4.2, a fun and educational math game for
people of all ages. It is available for download from the John Mauro
Software web site at:

     http://cs.alfred.edu/~maurojc/software

The object of Digital Wipeout is to score as many points as possible by
"wiping out" numbers on the game board. As many as eight players (human
or computer) may play at once. The computer players have five levels of
difficulty to challenge any level of player. You can also play alone and
try to set a new high score by wiping out the entire game board.

Digital Wipeout is also completely customizable. An optional timer may
be set to three different speeds or turned off entirely. Game board
elements may be toggled on and off. You can even select your own
background picture to play on! Digital Wipeout features CD quality sound
by Fadeout Studios.

Please feel free to distribute unregistered versions of my programs to
any interested users. If you have any questions concerning Digital
Wipeout or John Mauro Software, please write to maurojc@kagi.com.

Subject: [*] Expert Blackjack 3.0

Learn to play better, test various strategies, and practice card
counting. Expert Blackjack is a sophisticated Blackjack simulator and
trainer.

Expert Blackjack is designed to provide the feel of a gambling casino
with realistic card dealing at a table with six players whose chips move
across the table when hands are won or lost. The user can learn to play
Blackjack better, by having a hint window displayed if an incorrect play
is made, or having the program deal only specific types of hands, like
pairs or soft hands, so these can be practiced directly. Card counting
can also be practiced.

Going beyond the standard casino games, Expert Blackjack can show how
much money a particular strategy will win (or lose) in Las Vegas, and
even draws a histogram showing the distribution of outcomes. The
statistical package tracks the payoff on each card combination to
understand the best play. You can even experiment with two artificial
intelligence routines, the genetic algorithm and learning agents, to see
if a computer can learn to play Blackjack. Good Luck!

Expert Blackjack is shareware with a fee of $10 and includes a 50 page
manual.

Subject: [*] French version of Snow 2.4 (freeware)

Snow 2.4 by Dave Warker (French Version)

Snow is a small, FREE application for the Mac that drifts snowflakes down
the screen accompanied by the gentle sound of sleigh bells and music!

New in this version:
Ń With Quicktime 4.0 or later Snow will now play MP3 audio files in the Snow
Tunes folder.
Ń Added a few more flake image sets (courtesy of Matt Bowmer.)
Ń Internal change to make life easier for language localizers.
Ń Fixed a memory leak involving aliases in the Snow Tunes folder.

The basic flakes and sleigh bells should work on any Mac. Music requires
QuickTime(tm) 2.0 or later, though QuickTime 3 or later is highly
recommended. Quicktime 4 or later is required to play MP3 audio files.
Automatic wake up requires System 7 or later.

Includes QuickTime music files of jazzed up holiday favorites. Being
musically inept, I didn't create them, I found them on the Net.

Snow is *FREE*. I do request prior approval to include it in any mass
distribution such as a CDROM or book. I would also appreciate a copy of each
such distribution if possible.

See the "About Snow" menu item in the Snow application for additional
information.

Subject: [*] HandyMan 2.0.6

HandyMan is a complete and easily configurable application dock and launcher
that sits in the Control Strip

It is designed to allow quick and easy access to applications, Control
Panels, Desk Accessories, Folders and other documents stored on your
Macintosh, without having to navigate through several ÓFinder WindowsÔ or
through a multi-layered, hierarchical Apple menu.

It works by clicking on icons installed in the Control Strip window, or
dropping documents onto them. This approach is much handier than aliases
that are on the desktop because the Control Strip window that contain the
icons can never be covered by other windows. HandyMan also requires a lot
less desktop space than the same number of icons on the desktop.

For more info or downloads:
<http://gallery.uunet.be/bwynants/mac/HandyMan.html>

2.0.6 changes:
*  Update of Dutch Catalog
*  Added Danish catalog.
* command and control key swapped.
* Added Help based on AppleGuide.
*  Update of Japanese catalog.
*  Added Ukrainian catalog.
* Extensions Strip and Control Strip can run at the same time now.
*  Using IconServices when available.
* Translucent Dragging works again in System 9.0.
* Correct detection of system version.
* Dropping an icon on the + that already exists works correct now
* Updating problems fixed with Control Strip 2.0.
* Popinfo should always and faster appear now (Control Strip).
* Both favorites and recent are added to application popup menu's.
* Drag And Drop works for OutLook Express Enclosures (and many others).
* Using Magic Icon Placements (see technote TB 42) for custom sorting.
* Recompile with CW 5 and MacOS9 headers.
*  New Register Application Added.
* Corrected email address in documentation.
* New homepage address in documentation and Application.

Subject: [*] MADE 1.5.0 - Macintosh Application Development Essentials

Macintosh Application Development Essentials (MADE for short) is a tiny
package of C/C++ code which provides all the lowest-level needs for a
Macintosh application. It contains basic routines for dealing with
errors, memory, menus, events, linked lists, AppleEvents and
Drag-and-Drop.

MADE is used extensively at Sig Software for our own programs. Analog
Helper, Cross Platform, Drop Drawers and Email Effects for Mac are built
entirely on the MADE framework, while Email Merge and NameCleaner use
parts of it.

If you purchase MADE, you will receive extra code for string
manipulation, opening URLs, threading, dealing with memory and file
buffers, dialog box items and opening and saving files with the new
Navigation Services. All of these features are documented with comments
in the code.

Version 1.5.0 adds intelligent window zooming, toolbar support, display
depth/resolution change notices, pointer registration routines and many
other improvements.

Subject: [*] StatistFunctions2.4 / HyperCard stack statistical PDFs and CDFs

StatistFunctions version 2.4
--------------------
This HyperCard stack by Oscar van Vlijmen computes many statistical
functions with high accuracy.
Combinatorial functions: draws, permutations (and factorials even for large
numbers!), variations, combinations.
Probability density functions: hypergeometric (Lucky 10, Lotto), binomial
(football toto), negative binomial, multinomial, Poisson, normal.
Cumulative distribution functions: standard normal and inverse, binomial,
negative binomial, chi square, Cauchy, discrete log-series, Erlang,
negative exponential, extreme value, logistic, gamma, beta, F, T,
non-central T, Pareto, Rayleigh, Rice, Tukey-Lambda, Von Mises, Wakeby,
Weibull.
Special functions: gamma, incomplete gamma, beta, incomplete beta, error,
factorial, Lerch transcendent, modified Bessel of first kind.
Plus an Erlang B/C traffic calculator, usable for very large traffic units
and number of trunks.
Many functions are clearly explained, although this stack is not a course
in statistics.
Emphasis is on statistical usefulness and accuracy, even for big numbers,
not on frills.
All input and output is saved in a text field.

New in version 2.4:
* Added separate button for accurate modified Bessel function of the first
kind and order 1.
* Fixed the limit of z=38 for cumulative standard normal distribution. Now
you can enter very large arguments.
* Added the special function Lerch transcendent.
* Added distributions: discrete logarithmic series distribution (CDF), the
difficult to compute non-central T distribution (CDF), the Rice
distribution (PDF & CDF).

Freeware; not to be used for commercial applications; not on CD-ROM‚s.

http://www.macupdate.com/reviews/adam/stuffcm.html: "StuffCM is such a
sublime addition to the Mac OS, it's a wonder that it's not built in."

StuffCM is a contextual menu plugin that works with Aladdin Systems' StuffIt
Engine. It can stuff, unstuff, convert, BinHex, segment and join files
directly in the Finder through the contextual menu commands.

The StuffCM package also includes a control panel with lots of settings to
play with, plus the option to assign modifier keys to toggle those settings
on the fly. And it's 100% Appearance Manager savvy! Plus it supports
contextual menus - something many of Apple's own control panels don't!

Version 2.5 features the following changes:

*Compatible with StuffIt 5
*Now has registration codes. Previously registered users will be e-mailed their codes.

Bugs fixed in version 2.5.2:

*Works again in Mac OS 8 and 8.1
*Certain registration codes were not being accepted
*The Stuff command is available for text files that the StufIt Engine
identifies as MIME files, such as saved e-mail messages

The file might appear in dialogs depending on what application is being
used.

The main use for making a file invisible is to hide it from the user who
is not experienced.

There are utilities that will find invisible files for you like FileBuddy,
or there is AppleScript and some osaxen with which you can find invisible
files.

Or FileTyper which can make every file visible on a volume. :-}

My ISP only allows a certain amount of time each month before I start
paying through the nose for additional hours. Changing ISPs is not an
option; there are only two in this area with local dialups.

I currently use PPPremier Timer to monitor my online time, and have

Is there an application similar to PPPremier Timer that can monitor and

How many others of us out there are struggling to understand system
freeze ups when trying to connect to or copy pictures from an old
QuickTake 100 Camera through the Serial connector?

I'm carefully building a Conflict Catcher configuration which will allow
me to use all the earlier QTake extensions and control panel so I can
mount the QTake icon on my desktop.

This hit or miss proposition has me scratching my head. Which side is
having trouble? If I leave out any of the Qtake Extensions the CP and
App complain and won't start. If I leave them in and let the 8.5 and 8.6
extensions ride alongside then I freeze up when the CP tries to connect.

Sometimes I can connect but then freeze when copying files. Sometimes I
have no problem.
If I start with AppleTalk ON and then let the CP tell me to turn it off I
get more success than if I startup without AppleTalk altogether.

This must be something other people have had to deal with. Where do I
start?
