What's BOOM?
BOOM is my new, long awaited (at least by me ;-) game.
It's an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the playability and
feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the Macintosh.
It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom". Actually, I took the basic
Bomberman idea and dropped it in a "Super-Deformed Doom" scenario (whatever
this means).
If you don't know what Bomberman and Doom are, definitely you've never
played a computer game. This is the right time to start.
BOOM's main features are:
- Smooth sprite based animations in 256 colors
- 8 different soundtracks and multi-channel sound effects
- Simultaneous two players action
- 80 different levels
- 10 different enemy characters varying in intelligence and weaponry
- Mid-game monsters and a final Super Boss
System Requirements
68020/030/040 or PowerPC;
4 MBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0.1 or later;
640x480 or larger monitor supporting 256 colors;
Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

The basic idea is that files you drag and drop onto your application are
immediately available as files which you can use standard C and C++ functions

operate on.
The clever bit is that the C/C++ compiler itself is also a drag-and-drop file
filter, so to generate your new application, you just drop the source code
on the
'gcc' application !

GenKey is a Family Tree Editor. After filling in vital information (name,
date of birth, ..., parents, siblings, spouse(s), children) with the names
of the files where similar information for those people (if they exist), an
HTML file can be produced for placement on the web, as well as a separate
data file which can be used to later modify the page produced. The family
tree produced can be distributed on different hosts.
GenKey is shareware priced at $18. It is a Java application, so it is
cross platform but the user must have a Java virtual machine installed.

When you unstuff this file there should be 858Kb of sound here, unless
my logic board is still on the fritz. You may not want to use all of the
sound files for your system file, if you are running low on hard disk
space.
This is freeware so, pass these around if you want to, they are System
7 sounds and will only work on Apple computers. They also work on my
Macintosh Plus which is System 6. If anyone out there can change the
sound format to .wav format, go ahead, so that PCer's can hear the
sounds too. I use them on ichat through Earthlink's Chat room.

Hi All
I am considering a purchase of a PowerPC upgrade for my PowerBook 520c. The
upgrade is from Newer Technologies and includes a 603e running at 167 Mhz,
with 8 megs of RAM onboard. The upgrade runs about $800. Has anyone tried this
product, or the 117 Mhz flavor that preceeded it? If so I would appreciate any
comments about how it works with respect to stability, actual gain in speed
compared to the '040 processor that came with the 520c, and any other
comments.
One thing I am aware of is that the upgrade does not work properly with my
built-in Global Village modem. But my plan is to remove that 14.4 modem and
use instead an external 33.6 Kbs modem, also from Newer Tech, that will get
power from the ADB port. It looks pretty slick, tiny and light.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these products that might speak
for or against? I would appreciate your comments.

John McMullen, The author of Smart Alarms now calls it Early Bird. It's one
of those terrific little shareware programs that does one thing, and does
it very well. I've been using it for over a year and it never once failed
to remind me of something, or lost data, or failed to forward a repeating
alarm correctly.
If you're looking for a reliable, simple, pleasant-to-use reminder system
for a Mac, Early Bird is it.

significant, two less significant (in terms of what PS users do). Mac wins
the three more significant tests by a large margin, beats the PentiumPro on
all tests (more than twice as fast at RGB to CMYK), and loses the two less
significant operations to the PentiumMMX by margins so narrow you have to
stare at the chart very hard to see that the Pentium sneaked in less than
half a second faster in the two cases.
Downside for the Mac: the Pentium MMX system was priced at $3000 and the
Mac at $4430; both had 64MB RAM.
Upside: there are cheaper, faster 200MHz 604e MacOS machines. My guess is
that the Mac would have won all tests if they'd been run on a Power
Computing 200MHz 604e; a 64MB PowerTower or PowerTowerPro Core Config
should cost about $3500-$3600, depending on where you go for memory. I
don't know if there are faster *cheaper* Pentium200's than the Polywell
systems Byte used.

hi. i just got a pwercenter 132, and everything was working fine for a
while. then i brought over everything from my old machine, and everything was
still ok, although some icons were generic. no problem, i figured, just
rebuild the desktop. well, once i did that, even more icons were blank, and
now many of my programs won't run, and give an error -39 (which is end-of-file
error). i'm running the now utilities 6.0 that cam ewith the machine, but even
if i disable that, the problem still exists, even with files that were not
compressed by nu. if i get new copies, they work (although their icons still
don't show up). i don't know whether these problems are related, but i've
tried norton utilities (alternate master directory problem, but it was fixed),
and i've rebuilt the desktop several times now, normally at startup and with
techtool. and i've even done a clean install of the system (7.5.3, and then
7.5.5 updater). anyone have any ideas?
separately, on my old machine, i used stripper or one of those utilities for
removing ppc code from my programs (mostly shareware). now i have a ppc. does
anyone know of a utility that will look at all my programs and list those that
only have 68k code, so i can check to see what i need to redownload?

Subject: FWB Tools Extension conflicts with playing audio CD's
On my machine (a Powerwave 604/132) FWB's "FWB Tools" extension (a part
of FWB's "Hard Disk Toolkit 2.0" package) interferes with playing audio
CD's on the Mac's built-in CD ROM drive: After a few seconds of play,
the sound simply stops. The problem occurs both with Apple's "AppleCD
Audio Player" application and even with FWB's own "CDT Remote"
application! I suspect that FWB Tools checks the SCSI bus every few
seconds, which somehow terminates the ongoing play.
I have not tried to find any workarounds other than simply disabling
FWB Tools -- which has obvious penalties of its own. (Instaling
QuickTime 2.5 did not fix it).

Subject: How to do an auto re-boot?
I have a PowerMac 7100/66 running system 7.5.5 that I use as a server on an
AppleTalk network. Occasionally it crashes, which is not usually a big deal.
But if it crashes on a weeekend or evening and later I try to access it by
modem using ARA (running on another server on the same AppleTalk network), it
obviously is not to be found on the network. I then have to drive into the lab
to get whatever it was I wanted. I would like to have it automatically re-boot
daily at some specified time. I tried to do this using Auto Power-on/off but
there was apparently a conflict with an extension since I got a system hang on
restart. It was not clear to me that Auto Power-on/off would do what I wanted
anyway. I suppose you could tell it to shutdown and then one minute later to
start up again. However, I suspect this would not be very good for the
electronics/power supply compared to doing a restart.
Any suggestions for shareware/freeware that will auto re-boot?

I heard about Info-Mac long before I ever got my own Internet account, and
even though some of the digests were in some very nice shareware
collections I bought, I never could quite understand why there was such

And I just have to tell you: you guys make my day. It's not that I
download great tons of stuff, but I love reading through the lists of
what's new; it always makes me feel "rich and privileged," as a long-time
Mac user, to know all this cornucopia is available to me if I wish, that
all these mad programmers are out there feverishly working away to provide
such largesse -- even though I'm old, I get a tiny echo of the feeling I
used to have at Christmas: what will be inside *this* time? And above all,
that you guys keep shoveling it out to us, and on a volunteer basis!

Sounds like you're trying to do what I did at first: trying to plug the
"Archived as" info into your browser to download Info-Mac stuff. The trick
is to find a nearby Info-Mac archive, and add the pertinent prefix to it.
For example, my local archive is:
ftp://ftp.ucs.ubc.ca/pub/mac/info-mac/
...so I just pop that address in my Netscape "Go to:" window (without
hitting return), copy the part after "Archived as" in a given Info-Mac
posting, and paste it on the end of the ftp address, over top of
"/info-mac/".
I'm sure others can explain it more simply or eloquently, but that's what
works for me. Perhaps someone can suggest how to find the nearest Info-Mac
archive to your home?

1. be able to enter FIXED payments
2. be able to enter VARIABLE interest rates
3. have unlimited times that the interest rate can change

5. be able to handle a 30 year (plus) loan.
My basic goal is that I want to be able to see how my loan will be
extended or shortened if I keep the same payment when the interest rate
flucuates.
I've tried LoanPro, which seems good, but to enter the same fixed payment,
I have to do TONS of finagling. It will work eventually, but I'm looking
for something easier.

On a hard partition of a removable drive, norton disk doctor moved an
invisible appleshare pds file off bad blocks. This file, however, had
evidentally gotten corrupted and the good doctor had not clearly stated I
might replace it from uncorrupted backup or erase it entirely.
With the removable drive online, sharing setup control panel wouldn't
start filesharing.
I hypothesized the corrupted file.
Thanks Apple for telling me that trashing the suspected corrupted
files wouldn't hurt anything (except bringing back to defaults). These
files get recreated like pref's files, but, not on boot, but rather when
you turn on sharing.
Trashing invisible files, appleshare pds, on both hard partitions made
these get created anew and uncorrupted and then filesharing would start!
Thought the rest of you might like to know this trick or comment on it
to make it a better trick.

Subject: Need Advice for new Keyboard
I'm in the market for a new keyboard, and I need some advice from the
Collective.
I have a Performa 636, and everything was fine with my AppleDesign 2
Keyboard, although I thought the feel of it was a little squishy (though
that was useful at times, as there was no noise to wake sleeping
roommates). Then I dropped a book on it. Not once but twice. The
keyboard would often lock up: none of the keys would work, and the LED's
would do strange things. So I switched the keyboard with my roommate's,
and everything was fine. Until I droppped this keyboard. (Getting the
picture?)
My roommate's keyboard was the Apple Extended Keyboard II, called by many
as "the best keyboard Apple ever made" and I'd almost agree.
However, it had a few problems: whenever I typed the word "out", I would
often get "ou;", and there were a few other similar typographical
errors. I'd noticed these exact same errors on other people's 630-series
macs copuled with the AEK II, so I suspect it's an incompatibility.
Anyway, the keyboard has finally and totally failed, and I need to buy a
new one. In short, I'm looking for answers to the following:
-Do I need to buy a new keyboard, or should I chance buying a used one
>From the web classifieds?
-Do I need to buy Genuine Apple, or are some of the less expensive clones
worth it? (I'm looking at a "Seijin" 109-key for $39, from
"www.poweron-line.com" but I've never heard of the manufacturer)
-Are the technocool keyboards with builtin joystick/trackball/trackbad
worth it?
-Are the so-called "ergonomic" keyboards worth it
-I'd appreciate it if you could give me recommendations. I'm
particularly looking for a firm touch and some ergonomics. I also need a
keyboard with another ADB port for my mouse. I definitely want a numeric
keypad and an inverted-tee arrowkey cluster, with the
insert/delete/home/end/pgup, and the full set of 15 function keys.

Greetings InfoMac-ers!
I followed a suggestion posted here a while back to avoid Netscape-induced
b-tree errors on my hard drive; since there were some posts about this problem
in the past few weeks (I just caught up on my infomac reading over the
weekend) I will review the fix I used (thanks to one of you whose name I can't
recall). I also have a question about RAM disks.
Netscape writes a copy of pages visited recently to a disk cache to speed up
future access to the same pages. For some reason, this often results in a
corrupted disk directory that can lead to severe problems. One fix (suggested
here recently) is to partition your hard drive and cache to a partition that
contains less important data (ie, not your System Folder). But this involves
reinitializing your HD.
Another fix is to create a RAM disk with about 1 meg of memory and to cache
there. This has the added bonus of fast access to the cache, but at the cost
of losing a meg of RAM since the amount designated for the RAM disk goes into
the system heap and can't be used for anything else. This works well for me,
since I have enough RAM (for now, anyway).
But here is the question: when I shut down my PowerBook 520c (system 7.5.5)
there is no problem with the RAM disk. However, on my PowerMac 7100/66 (same
system) shutting down results in a message that the contents of the RAM disk
will be lost. On the next restart a new RAM disk is initialized, which stops
the startup while SAM asks for permission to initialize a disk. The next time
you fire up Netscape it looks for the "cache #196#" on the RAM disk, can't
find it, and reverts to caching on the hard drive. I solved this problem by
telling Netscape to cache to RAM disk (rather than "cache #196#" in RAM disk)
so now it doesn't matter if the RAM disk gets reinitialized each startup
(except that the cache is gone and all pages have to be downloaded again).
So there is really no problem here, except my curiosity. Why does the RAM disk
work differently on the two computers? And why does doing a shutdown on the
PowerMac 7100/66 erase the RAM disk while doing a restart does not? I searched
the Apple Tech Library but nothing turned up.

Dear all,
I wonder if someone of you can answer a couple of questions of a real
beginner.
I work at the University of Torino (Italy). Recently a network has been set
up in my Dept. so I don't need those expensive modem connections to get use
of WWW, FTP, e-mail, etc. etc. The network administratory system here is
still very primitive though, and basically concerned with finance rather
technical aspects (i.e. "...we don't need that piece of hardware or
software _because_ is expensive...". Although the third party who set up
the network would provide tech. service if requested, I would like to know
more about it all. Here are the questions:
1) Can anybody suggest a good book to learn the basics of networking, for a
real beginner. I need something that explains why do we need a hub, what is
a router, and the like; at least as a start.
2) Is there some software I can install on the machine (Performa 475) in my
office to get a modem connection to that machine from home and do some work
>From home involving use of the network of the Dept, including use of WWW
etc.? That would allow me to work without having to pay for a home-ISP out
of my pocket money.

Hey, it's another Philly person!
Apple says that the Desktop Printer software only creates icons for devices=
that use Apple's drivers or their derivatives. These would include drivers=
for ImageWriters, LaserWriters, and 3rd party drivers based on them, such=
as the HP LaserJet drivers. The DeskWriter drivers probably are not based=
on Apple products and are not recognized as printer drivers by the DP 2.0=
application. From whereever I read this (I don't remember... probably it=
was Information Alley), I believe they have not released the API to let=
other companies 'hook' into the DP app yet, but plan on doing so in the fut=
ure.
Sorry, but I'm pretty sure you have to wait on Apple and HP for this one.

With all the discussion about Norton Utilities lately (at least on Mac-L),
I was feeling pretty good about never having had any problems with it.
[Thanks a lot, guys! ;( ] Why can't I have a wooden desk to knock on...?!
Anyway last nite, after several crashes on my PowerComputing 604/120 and
finding a corrupted file, I decided it must be time for a check up (I
normally do this on a regular basis anyway, but more often after crashes).
Well, Norton churns away for a while, then reports a list of about 75 files
that "share the same space and are probably damaged". They weren't real
important, ones that I could re-install, so I continued on. Norton then
complained that the volume information map (?) AND the master directory
block was damaged, and I allowed it to fix them. I ran the check again,
and of course it told me about the files again, but didn't say anything
about the info map or directory block. So I quit, delete the supposedly
damaged files, and ran Norton again.
Well, this second time, Norton complains about a _different_ list of files
that "share the same space and are probably damaged", and again complains
about the map and the directory block. So I again delete the files (one of
which was the Desktop DF file), fix the map and directory block, then
restart and immediately abort the resulting desktop rebuild, and run Norton
one more time.
Now I'm on the third iteration of this same situation, files that "share
the same space and are probably damaged" and damaged volume info map and
master directory block. This list of files is now encroaching upon more
important files, and I'm starting to get worried--no backup. :(
Has anyone seen this occur? Is Norton getting confused? Am I doing the
correct sequence of fixes?
My setup is a PowerComputing 604/120 (PCI), System 7.5.5, either 40 or 48
MB RAM (don't remember, I'm at work), version 3.1.3 of Norton Disk Doctor,
and all extensions except Stuffit SpaceSaver turned OFF. I did install the
BeOS from MacTech onto an entirely separate disk, which is having NO
problems whatsoever, so I can't believe that that would have anything to do
with it, and the problems did NOT surface immediately after doing this; it
was after several crashes from the MacOS when the problems surfaced.

I have now for about a year to keep track of my web page sites,

WebArranger used to be able to detect a URL that was no longer valid (i.e.
moved or changed) by running a URL Validator agent. Lately however,
I can't seem to keep the URL Validator on for more than three seconds.
I go back to the menu and find it has stopped. Anybody know how
to keep it on while it scans through the whole list of URL Validator sites?

You'll need a Plus with 4 MB to do much useful with a Plus. For just
plain word processing I recommend WriteNow, which has a small memory
footprint and is responsive on the Plus's 68000 8MHz processor.
See the February 97 issue of MacAddict for more on what a Plus is good
for. It runs System 7.5.5 fine, so I here. I'm still running 7.0.1 on
mine. It's the last system release I know of to come on 800K floppies.

(cheers). She wants to purchase a powerbook, of which I know nothing about.
I can only give her the usual literature from mac magazines (like macuser)
and apple sites. She is undecided between the 2300 duo or the 1400
Powerbooks. I don't want to give her the wrong advice. I would appreciate
any advice anyone can give her on her first macintosh purchase, things like:
reliability base on past experiences, ease of use, and expandability.
