System Preparation

The first requirement of gnome-ppp is to make sure your operating system kernel supports PPP. Since Gnome is a multi-UNIX desktop project, no specific information on kernel PPP setup is given here. GNU/Linux systems often come with PPP support built into the kernel, or as a autoload module.

As superuser (root), you will need to edit the file /etc/ppp/options. This file is used by the operating system's PPP system to override user options. Since gnome-ppp runs as a user program, conflicting options defined in this file will cause the PPP connection to fail. Unless you need to use a PPP option not supported by gnome-ppp, it is best to leave this file empty; however, you cannot remove the file or your PPP connection will fail.
